Excerpt from The English Hymn: Its Development and Use in Worship Just now we are not defending hymns but alleging the circumstances making it inevitable that anything in the line of a serious study of the English Hymn should be so long deferred, and that our English Hymnology should lag so far behind the German. Daniel Sedgwick, a self - taught second - hand bookseller of London (1814 was ac tually the first collector of the hymn books, and to his little shop in Sun-street, Bishopsgate, used to resort so many of the editors as cared enough for the hymns they were han dling to inquire into their authorship and text. And yet in a scientific age the collection and study of old psalm and hymn books, which are the remains and record of the spiritual life of contemporaneous Christians, would seem just as rational as the collection and classification of fossil shells, which are the remains and record of the animal life of contemporaneous mollusca. Really it has awakened, wrote a reader of one of the ensuing chapters, the sus picion that there is no better point of view from which to study the development and the reactions of Christian belief than that offered by Hymnody. This is not strange; for after all beliefs of the first rate in in uence receive and, I have the impression, always have received their best and final embodiment in poetry and especially lyric poetry. I would not have him mislike me for my complexion, or fancy that, because this is a somewhat elaborate - and, I hope, somewhat accurate - treatise on the Authors and History of Eng lish Hymns, it must therefore be dry reading and useless to all except the musty grubbers among old hymn - books. Nor would I have him - or her, for I know as many women who love hymns as I do men -think me capable of imposing on his credulity with every sort Of ill-grounded or sentimental tradition concerning the origin or the use of these Hymns. The size of the present volume shows what has been omitted as well as in cluded. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume.
