Street photographers will never tire of New York as a subject. It is the perfect setting for the genre, the world's most evocative cityscape, against which candid, memorable moments play themselves out every day. Nearly a decade ago, Vivienne Gucwa began walking the streets of the city with the only camera she could afford a sub-$100 point-and-shoot and started taking pictures. Choosing a direction and going as far as her feet would take her, she noticed lines, forms and structures that had previously gone unnoticed, but which resonated, embodying a sense of home. Having limited equipment forced her to learn about light, composition and color, and her burgeoning talent won her blog millions of readers and wide recognition in the photographic community. New York Through the Lens showcases the stunning results of her ongoing quest. Filled with spectacular photographs and illuminated by Vivienne's own insightful commentary, NY Through the Lens acts as a beautiful travel guide to the city; it will be a must-read for her many fans and for any lover of street photography.

For others, it’s a dream destination: the diverse urban center where they will finally feel they belong. And still for many, it’s the place they already call home. No matter how you view New York, longtime fashion editor and photographer Susan Kaufman will help you see the city with fresh, appreciative eyes. New York may be known as the city that never sleeps, but beneath the bustle, there’s a soulful side, with its own quiet power and universal allure. Walk with Me New York invites readers to appreciate the streets and buildings that have made the world’s most iconic city survive centuries of change yet retain its vitality and aspirational magnetism.

"Arranged thematically, the photographs showcased here are but a sampling from about 22,000 images produced by the Byron Company's New York City commercial studio over a 50-year period. And for 40 of those years, Mrs. Joseph Byron oversaw the photo-printing work for what is usually thought of as a father-and-son enterprise. The Museum of the City of New York acquired the negatives and prints when the firm closed in 1942. Three earlier books on the Byron Collection failed to show the breadth of the collection, which was recently revealed during an archiving project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. With their large-format cameras, the Byrons went beyond the sheltered world of the upper classes in their elegant houses and ocean liners. Also included are documentary images of Lower East Side tenements, recently arrived steerage passengers, and the African American neighborhood west of Columbus Circle. The reproduction quality here is excellent, and the interpretive captions lend meaning to these definitive views of early 20th-century New York City. Highly recommended for photography, architecture, and urban studies collections. Kathleen Collins, Bank of America Archives, San Francisco"--Library Journal
