A celebration of Yiquan for enthusiasts seeking a deeper and richer appreciation of the magnificence of the Internal Arts A departure from the standard "how-to" manual, Yiquan 360 provides the often missing theory and associated practice that will allow students of the Internal Arts to unlock their full potential as practitioners. It will demystify and fill knowledge gaps that exist outside of what is commonly taught and available in Internal Arts literature. Yiquan 360 was written to fulfill a promise made by Ling Seto to the late Francis H.T. Chan, a school mate and sparring partner of Bruce Lee, who served as a combat instructor to British troops stationed in Hong Kong. This book contains insights and teachings from almost fifteen years of training, observation and direction under Mr. Chan that are supported by Ling Seto's own experience and discoveries from five decades of martial arts study. As one of the rare texts to comprehensively describe and clarify the theory and practice behind the types of Internal Power and the techniques used by Yiquan to produce them, this book also reveals the founder's ultimate aim for Yiquan, and provides insight into other martial arts that utilise Internal Power, answering questions including the following: The rationale behind the slow pace of Taiji Yiquan's equivalent to Bagua's circle walking The role of Xingyi in influencing Yiquan The relation of the Internal Arts to Shaolin Qigong For current practitioners, this book is an invaluable resource that provides a bird's eye view of Yiquan, explaining all aspects of the art and the proper training progressions required to advance. For other internal arts students, this volume provides key insights into the methodology to produce Internal Power in their own practice. Through the understanding of Yiquan training procedures and their purpose, students can rediscover methods in their respective arts that will enhance their training and skills.

He also provides a history of the origins and lineage of the Yiquan tradition, as well as detailed information on the stances and movements, weapons, and programs, grading and teaching. This complete guide to Yiquan will be essential for anyone interested in Yiquan or oriental martial and internal arts more generally.

The name Sun Lu Tang rings familiar to almost anyone who has studied one or more of the major "internal" styles of Chinese martial arts. Because Sun was highly skilled in Xing Yi Quan, Ba Gua Zhang, and Tai Ji Quan, he wrote five different books on these subjects and synthesized the three arts to invent Sun Style Tai Ji Quan. His name has become well known wherever Chinese martial arts are practiced. Sun Lu Tang's treatise on Xing Yi Quan, published in 1915, was his first work and it was the first book published publically in China which integrated the thories of martial arts with Chinese philosophy and Daoist Qi cultivation theories. In addition to the original text of Sun's Xing Yi Quan book, this English translation also includes a detailed biography of Sun Lu Tang and an interview with his daughter, Sun Jian Yun. Book jacket.

This open access book is the first publication to provide a comparative framework for the study of martial culture and historical martial arts in Europe and Asia, in particular in Italy and China. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of martial studies, contributors to this volume include historians, archeologists, art historians, scholars of fencing literature, metallurgists, as well as contemporary master swordsmiths and masters-of-arms in historical martial arts. Assembling researchers from these diverse fields, this book offers a multi-perspectival and dynamic view of martial culture across time and space. The cross-cultural and interdisciplinary significance of this book cannot be overemphasized. Whereas a number of contributors are internationally recognized and, indeed, leading authorities in their respective fields; for example, Jeffrey Shaw has been a world-leading new media artist and scholar since the 1970s, while Ma Mingda is a well-known historian and the contemporary founder of Chinese martial studies; and while there are significant overlaps in their research interests, this book brings their research within a single volume for the first time. Equally significant, the book is structured in such a way to reflect the various core aspects of martial studies, particularly in relation to the study of historic sword culture, including history, culture, philosophy, literature and knowledge transmission, material culture, as well as the technical aspects of historical fencing. As one of the first titles on martial studies, this book becomes a reference not only for scholars taking an interest in this subject, but also for historians; scholars with interest in Chinese and/or Italian history (particularly of the Medieval or early modern periods), the history of international relations in Asia / Far East; anthropologists; scholars of martial (arts) studies and researchers in sword-making and/or historic metallurgy.
