Yakari, who lives his dreams, goes with Little Thunder to look for the herd led by White Buffalo. The two friends cross a scorching desert before finding themselves faced with a wall of rocks. Yakari scales the wall and discovers green pastures where the much-awaited herd is lingering. The bison take refuge there when they lack food during the migrations. Yakari is the first human to walk these fertile lands that are hidden in the desert. Knowing that the Red Men need them, the buffalo obey their destiny. Yakari will keep his discovery a secret.

When Yakari climbs over the wall, he discovers green pastures where the buffaloes have taken refuge. Yakari is the first human to walk these fertile lands hidden in the desert. Knowing that the Red Men need them, the buffaloes follow Yakari.

Yakari gets to know the ways of the lord of the plains: the buffalo. After a hunt that brought the tribe much needed supplies, Yakari is visited in his dreams by the buffalo, killed the day of his birth, whose pelt still serves as his blanket. Intrigued, the young Sioux and Little Thunder go see the great herd. From encounter to encounter, and by helping a young mother and her newborn calf against a particularly nasty wolf, Yakari learns to know those majestic animals so important to his own people’s survival...

A strange eagle has wounded a brave from Yakari’s tribe and stolen his talisman. To recover it and allow the man to wake from his unnatural slumber, young Yakari will have to climb a mountain to find the eagle’s nest. Forced to go alone when Little Thunder can’t follow anymore, he will have to make new friends–with sure feet and warm coats–and brave the majestic bird’s proud anger.

After a long rainy spell, large stretches of the prairie are flooded, much to the displeasure of most of its inhabitants. Yakari visits his friends to make sure everyone is all right, then falls asleep that night and dreams of clouds mysteriously coming out of the water. The young Sioux’s dreams are not always completely random, though, and the next day he rides out in search of signs. What he will find will soon unite all his friends in a desperate rescue mission ...
