Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus: Large Print by Ludwig Wittgenstein Perhaps this book will be understood only by someone who has himself already had the thoughts that are expressed in it--or at least similar thoughts.--So it is not a textbook.--Its purpose would be achieved if it gave pleasure to one person who read and understood it.The book deals with the problems of philosophy, and shows, I believe, that the reason why these problems are posed is that the logic of our language is misunderstood. The whole sense of the book might be summed up the following words: what can be said at all can be said clearly, and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Ludwig Wittgenstein is one of the greatest and most fascinating philosophers of all time. His Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, composed in a series of remarkable numbered propositions, was the only book he published in his lifetime. He tackles nothing less than the question of whether there is such a thing as a logically perfect language and, armed with it, what we can say about the nature of the world itself. Pushing the limits of language, logic and philosophy, the Tractatus is a brilliant, cryptic and hypnotic tour de force, exerting a major impact on twentieth-century philosophy and stirring the imagination today. With a new foreword by Ray Monk.

Excerpt from A Study in Wittgenstein's Tractatus This study in Wittgenstein's Tractatus is substantially as it was written in 1933. By the time I had finished my study, the importance of the Tractatus in philosophical circles was on the wane, probably because Of Wittgenstein's deprecating atti tude toward his own book. But the recent revival of interest in the Tractatus leads me now to think that the essay may be of interest to contemporary philosophers, and so I have de cided to publish it. Strangely, no book in English dealt exclusively with the Tractatus until 1959, when Miss G. E. M. Anscombe brought out her Introduction to Wittgenstein's Tractatus, largely con cerned with logical details of the Tractatus and especially valuable, I think, because it shows the essential connections of Wittgenstein with Frege, Russell, and Ramsey. Another book, Wittgenstein's Tractatus, by E. Stenius, has lately been announced for publication, and there are rumors Of still Others on the way. It is unfortunate that Friedrich Waismann, who was so close to Wittgenstein shortly after the Tractatus was finished, has not published his book, though it was announced about thirty years ago. Excerpt from Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus In order to understand Mr Wittgenstein's book, it is necessary to realize what is the problem with which he is concerned. In the part of his theory which deals with Symbolism he is concerned with the conditions which would have to be fulfilled by a logically perfect language. There are various problems as regards language/ First, there is the problem what actually occurs in our minds when we use language with the intention Of meaning something by it; this problem belongs to psychology. Secondly, there is the problem as to what is the relation subsisting between thoughts, words, or sentences, and that which they refer to or mean; this problem belongs to epistemology. Thirdly, there is the problem of using sentences so as to convey truth rather than falsehood. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Austrian philosopher LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN (1889-1951) was hugely influential on 20th-century philosophy, and here, he constructs a series of carefully and precisely numbered propositions on the relationship between language, logic, and reality, using a numbering system to show nested relationships between the propositions. Considered one of the major recent works of philosophy-a reputation enhanced, undoubtedly, by Bertrand Russell's glowing introduction-this edition is a reproduction of the translation by C.K. Ogden, first published in 1922, for which Wittgenstein himself assisted in the preparation of the English-language manuscript. Students of philosophy and those fascinated by the history of ideas will want a copy of this essential volume.
