We examine the impact of uncertainty on employment dynamics. Alternative measures of uncertainty are constructed based on the survey of professional forecasters, and regressionbased forecasting models for GDP growth, inflation, S&P500 stock price index, and fuel prices. Our results indicate that greater uncertainty has a negative impact on growth of employment, and the effects are primarily felt by the relatively smaller businesses; the impact on large businesses are generally non-existent or weaker. Our results suggest that to truly understand the effects of uncertainty on employment dynamics, we need to focus on the relatively smaller and entrepreneurial businesses. We discuss implications for the framing of economic policy.

In his seminal Turing Award Lecture, Backus discussed the issues stemming from the word-at-a-time style of programming inherited from the von Neumann computer. More than forty years later, computer architects must be creative to amortize the von Neumann Bottleneck (VNB) associated with fetching and decoding instructions which only keep the datapath busy for a very short period of time. In particular, vector processors promise to be one of the most efficient architectures to tackle the VNB, by amortizing the energy overhead of instruction fetching and decoding over several chunks of data. This work explores vector processing as an option to build small and efficient processing elements for large-scale clusters of cores sharing access to tightly-coupled L1 memory

This volume is a compilation of the lectures at TASI 2012, held in Boulder, Colorado, June 2012. The program comprises two parallel lecture series on particle physics and on cosmology. The particle physics lectures covers LHC related experimental techniques, phenomenology, as well as basics in physics beyond the standard model. The cosmology series give a general introduction to modern cosmology with special attention to the topics of dark matter, the microwave background and alternatives to the standard model of cosmology.
