Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

This paper contains the designs of high opening bottom trawls which could be suitable for 50-180 hp small-scale fishing trawlers operating in coastal waters and large lakes. All necessary information for the construction of these trawls as well as for the preparation and adjustment of their rigging is supplied. This information is especially intended for small-scale fisheries skippers, and skipper-owners, as well as fishing net makers. Fishery officers, technicians, instructors, extension workers, especially in developing countries, are also likely to be interested.

Excerpt from On Trawling The Beam-trawl is in most use amongst the English, French, and the Netherlands; and the trawling is prosecuted principally in the North Sea and around our coasts by craft of various description, rig and tonnage. There are also different modes of preserving the fish in a fresh state when caught, and in its conveyance to land and the markets for which it is intended; there is the inshore and the deep sea trawling. The inshore trawling is prosecuted much in the same manner as the deep sea, but these do not go in fleets and the craft are necessarily smaller and the gear lighter, by them we have the bays and shallow parts of our coasts fished over, these craft using small mesh trawls doing great injury. Deep sea or Beam trawling as practised on our coasts has during the last century sprung from comparative insignificance to an important and increasing industry. The rapid development of late years maybe traced to the introduction of ice and the spread of our railway system, by which the catcher has been enabled to get the fruits of his toil distributed to the many thousands dwelling in the inland towns, those who seldom or never saw or tasted salt water fish.
