On the Other Side(s) of 150 explores the different literary, historical and cultural legacies of Canada’s sesquicentennial celebrations. It asks vital questions about the ways that histories and stories have been suppressed and invites consideration about what happens once a commemorative moment has passed. Like a Cubist painting, this modality offers a critical strategy by which also to approach the volume as dismantling, reassembling, and re-enacting existing commemorative tropes; as offering multiple, conditional, and contingent viewpoints that unfold over time; and as generating a broader (although far from being comprehensive) range of counter-memorial performances. The chapters in this volume are thus provisional, interconnected, and adaptive: they offer critical assemblages by which to approach commemorative narratives or showcase lacunae therein; by which to return to and intervene in ongoing readings of the past from the present moment; and by which not necessarily to resolve, but rather to understand the troubled and troubling narratives of the present moment. Contributors propose that these preoccupations are not a means of turning away from present concerns, but rather a means of grappling with how the past informs or is shaped to inform them; and how such concerns are defined by immediate social contexts and networks.

Arson is a very difficult crime to track because it is done in secret, there are usually no witnesses, and the evidence has almost always been burned up. Approximately 15 % of arson cases are committed by a serial arsonist. During a recent October, just north of Los Angeles, The City of Seaville, California has been experiencing the work of a serial arsonist, eight wildfires in a month. Increasingly frustrated over the lack of forensic evidence that would provide any leads, Fire Chief, Richard Bradford, turns to psychoanalyst, Dr. Roger Sterling, who suggests a rather revolutionary idea, that a serial arsonist could also be tracked through the dynamics of the mind. What begins as a journey of psychoanalytic research for Dr. Sterling, however, quickly turns into a journey of survival when he realizes that his own children are trapped in their home by a wildfire, and their nanny is lying motionless on the garage floor. Join a list of fascinating characters: Dingo, a homeless man suffering from psychosis, four runaway teenage girls, Buddy, a revolving door psychiatric patient, Big Bad Bob, a former professional wrestler who manages a local coffee shop, Mr. W., a compulsive gambler, Kyle, a jilted teenage boy, Dr. Sterlings colleague, CB, in Tennessee, and a lone character who roams the Seaville Valley at night, as the drama for survival unfolds in the community. Keep in mind that this is only the beginning. The yearly problem of wildfires will soon be opening the door into deeper issues in the quiet community of Seaville, California. This is the first novel of the Seaville Wildfire Trilogy.

How does the Soviet Union view the costs and benefits of nuclear arms control? What factors motivate Soviet negotiations with the Western world on this crucial issue? And what, precisely, does the Soviet Union hope to accomplish through nuclear arms control? Originally published in 1988, The Other Side of Arms Control provides an in-depth examination of this too infrequently discussed aspect of the arms race and the ongoing negotiations to halt it. In The Other Side of Arms Control, Alan B. Sherr argues that the time is now right for significant substantive progress to be made on nuclear arms control: the Soviet leadership under Mikhail Gorbachev has demonstrated greater flexibility and willingness to compromise on a number of difficult issues, including verification. But more important, circumstances within and outside the Soviet Union now make progress on arms control crucial to Soviet political and economic goals as well as foreign policy objectives. Written in accessible, nontechnical language, The Other Side of Arms Control will be of historical interest to students, teachers, policymakers, and others concerned with the future of nuclear arms control.

Didactically, a textbook of criminology should start at the beginning. The learning process, also an emotional process, begins in criminology with the concepts, views, emotions, attitudes and ideas we have regarding crime and criminals. Exploration of these underlying factors is one of the aims of the present book. We can free our thinking only by being aware of the significance of our own feelings and thoughts about a phenomenon like crime. 'That is the basic problem confronting us. In scien tific thinking implicit postulates as to the sensus communis, unless recognized and 1 neutralized, grow into idols.' The fight against crime is one example of such an idol. Crimes and criminals exist only by virtue of reactions to certain forms of be havior. For this reason this book will begin by examining the reactions of society to crime. Criminology is primarily a science of others than offenders. In this sense I invert criminology. The history of criminology is not so much a history of offenders, 2 as a history of the reactions of those in power.
