An invaluable modelers guide to the Bf 109 G and K variations When the Bf 109 was first designed in 1934, by a team led by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser, its primary role was that of a high-speed, short range bomber interceptor. The Bf 109 was also designed to take advantage of the most advanced aerodynamics of the time and embodied structural techniques which were an advance on its contemporaries. In the years of the Blitzkrieg, the Bf 109 was the only single engined fighter operated by the Luftwaffe, until the appearance of the Fw 190. The G series, or "Gustav," was introduced in mid-1942; its initial variants (G-1 through G-4) differed only in minor details from the Bf 109F, most notably in being powered by the more powerful 1475 PS DB 605 engine. The final production version of the Bf 109 was the K series, or "Kurfurst," powered by the DB 605D engine with up to 2,000 PS output, and introduced in the autumn of 1944. Though externally akin to the late production Bf 109G series, a large number of detail internal and aerodynamic improvements were incorporated to the design that improved its effectiveness and remedied existing flaws, keeping the fighter competitive with the latest Allied and Soviet fighters.

Commonly known as the Gustav because of the G suffix in its name, the Bf 109G began rolling off assembly lines in February 1942 and remained in production until the end of WWII. The Bf 109G was mainly distinguished from its predecessor by the fact that it incorporated the Daimler Benz DB 605 A engine, a powerplant with a takeoff rating of 1,475 hp, 125 hp more than the DB 601E engine in the Bf 109F-4. Production of the Bf 109G was also undertaken by Germany's allies, including Romania and Hungary. No reliable manufacturing statistics survive, but it is estimated that 23,000 Gustavs were built by the end of the war. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is the best-known German WWII fighter. He served between 1937 and 1945 and was confronted with an incredible series of increasingly aggressive opponents, who were faced with continuous changes and improvements, far exceeding the limits of the original project; in the end he doubled the weight and tripled the original power, whose inevitable price was a decidedly reduced autonomy compared to the first series. It was an extremely versatile aircraft: its latest versions even included a high-altitude fighter with a pressurized cabin. It was produced after the war in Czechoslovakia and Spain, and a total of about 35,000 were built: one of the greatest productions of all time. In books and magazines it is also sometimes called Me 109, from the contraction of the manufacturer's name. The abbreviation Bf indicates instead the name of the production factory (Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG) which in July 1938 changed its name to Messerschmitt AG. The planes designed from then on assumed the name Me, while those designed previously (including variants) continued to be called Bf. limits of the original project; eventually he came to double.

By the time the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, the Messerschmitt firm had produced some 34,000 examples of the legendary Bf 109, making it the most prolific aircraft of the era. Key to this tremendous output and to the plane's longevity was a simple design that allowed rapid production--even by unskilled Zwangsarbeiter (forced laborers)--and gave Messerschmitt an advantage over the Focke Wulf Fw 190. The Nazis came to power in January 1933 intent on scrapping the Versailles Treaty that banned Germany from having an air force. Issued on February 15, 1934, the request by the new Reichsluftfahrtsministerium (RLM/Air Ministry) for a single-seat daytime air combat fighter with a top speed of 400 km/h brought a new lease of life to the financially strapped Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW). BFW began work on the plane, its first military aircraft, that December, and in May 1935 the Bf 109 V1 prototype took to the air--10 months before the first Spitfire--launching the career of an iconic plane whose numerous versions would serve the Reich until the end of World War II. The Bf 109 B-1 with a two-blade propeller was the first variant to be mass produced and the first to see combat. Jagdgruppe 88 of the Legion Condor, serving Francisco Franco's Nationalists in Spain, took delivery of its first Bf 109 B-1 aircraft in May 1937. The 39 Messerschmitts went on to play a significant role in the Spanish Civil War. Other variants followed in short order. The Bf 109 C introduced wing armament to the craft. The Bf 109 D filled out Switzerland's air force. With their new three-bladed propeller, the 4,000 "Emils" (Bf 109 E) that rolled out between November 1938 and March 1939 formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter fleet during the first third of the Second World War. The fighter got a power boost when the "Gustav" (Bf 109 G) came out with the addition of the new Daimler Benz DB 605 A engine. The Luftwaffe began receiving the Bf 109 G in the summer of 1942 and output of the Gustav continued until January 1945. In October 1944, delivery to combat units began of the Bf 109 K-4, a version intended to bridge the gap, pending mass production of the Messerschmitt Me 262 A jet fighter.
