Small towns seem to be empty of most things, but don't be fooled. There are secrets and mysteries, some ancient and some new, hidden behind the walls of most sleepy communities. Franklin Furnace, Missouri, is no exception. My town is filled with mysteries and the paranormal. You just have to know where to look. My name is Rachel Law, and I started looking when I was only twelve. Law of Desire is the first book in a series of Rachel Law Paranormal Mysteries. I decided to tell this story first because the events still haunt me. It all started more than twenty-years ago, when a little girl went missing from our community. We searched for her, but when she was found she was long dead. The man that killed her was Homer Ellwood. He was captured, tried, found guilty, and sentenced to a mental facility. The local and regional press called him the Chocolate Man. He instantly became the thing that parents would warn their children would get them if they were not good. Maybe all towns have a local boogeyman. It gets even scarier when he is on the loose and more little girls go missing. I know the name doesn't seem scary, but believe me, it is. He came from a rural area where many people were more savage than civilized, raised in the primitive way of survival most of us could never imagine. He wasn't violent because he wanted to be, or because of some mental instability, it was a way of life breed into him, which he cultivated with greater success than anyone else. When he learned that he could use a child's desire to feed her sweet tooth, to feed his desire for killing, he became unstoppable. I took liberty to use the past-tense, out of my desire, for him to be in the past. But, with evil, and the paranormal, you never know. Once, everyone in the little rural community of Franklin Furnace relaxed, believing his capture and incarceration would end the terror. We even celebrated! But, desire is too strong an emotion, to just be over.In Law of Desire, I assemble a team to start paranormal investigations. Our first case, is to try to determine if the Chocolate Man is still alive, or if it's his ghosts that is abducting the little girls. As a paranormal investigator, I learned that desire is an emotion that can drive some people to act irrationally, maybe even criminally. It also may have a lasting impact, perhaps, even beyond death. When I started ghost hunting, seasoned investigators told me that some ghosts remain because of unfinished business. Perhaps, a person died, but their desire to accomplish one last thing was so great that they could never rest-in-peace. I find such desire to be so wildly romantic that I judge each of my boyfriends on who would have such devotion. I'm still searching. I also find it to be gut wrenchingly sad. I have interacted with ghosts who have been waiting centuries for their love to return. Ghost hunting can be sad, it can also be inspirational, and sometimes very scary. What do you desire? I want to share with you this paranormal story. I was a witness to all the events. Of all my adventures, this one still haunts me. I'm not sure exactly why. Perhaps, because this was the first serious investigation conducted by my team. Maybe it was because the killer had an old unfulfilled desire for me. Whatever the reason, desire can be a deadly emotion. You are invited to join us as we unravel the mystery. If you like mysteries, or the paranormal, or if you are a fan of character driven stories like those of Janet Evanovich, I think you will enjoy Law of Desire. I also sprinkled in some romance, and a little humor. Still, read it with a lot of lights on!

Against the background of the law reform debates around sexuality in Britain and America, Bamforth examines what functions it is legitimate for the law to serve and how effective law can be in achieving social goals. He provides a new and cogent argument for protecting lesbian and gay rights through law, but is sceptical about how useful law can be in eradicating discriminatory social practices. This work sheds new light on the equal rights debate and raises issues of central importance to the role of law in society.

The early decades of the twentieth century sparked the Detroit-Windsor region's ascendancy as the busiest crossing point between Canada and the United States, setting the stage for socioeconomic developments that would link the border cities for years to come. As Holly M. Karibo shows, this border fostered the emergence of illegal industries alongside legal trade, rapid industrial development, and tourism. Tracing the growth of the two cities' cross-border prostitution and heroin markets in the late 1940s and the 1950s, Sin City North explores the social, legal, and national boundaries that emerged there and their ramifications. In bars, brothels, and dance halls, Canadians and Americans were united in their desire to cross racial, sexual, and legal lines in the border cities. Yet the increasing visibility of illicit economies on city streets—and the growing number of African American and French Canadian women working in illegal trades—provoked the ire of moral reformers who mobilized to eliminate them from their communities. This valuable study demonstrates that struggles over the meaning of vice evolved beyond definitions of legality; they were also crucial avenues for residents attempting to define productive citizenship and community in this postwar urban borderland.
