The pirates, however, had flown, and so escaped arrest. This, beyond a doubt, is the first naval expedition of a warlike nature ever fitted out from the Piscataqua. It is probable, says Cooper, that the party was composed of fur traders from Virginia, and that their conduct appeared to the Puritans of the East so, light in general that some trifling excesses were misconstrued into piracy.
