This dissertation examines the early philosophical receptions to the work of Jacques Derrida, structuring the receptions in the form of an archive. The monograph is composed of three main sections: The Non-Locus of the Archive, The Derrida Archive, and Conclusion: The Margins of Philosophy. The Non-Locus of the Archive examines three ways of conceptualizing the archive: the archaeological or Foucauldian concept as a reaction to the traditional history of ideas, the traditional archive model Foucault attempts to replace, and a deconstructive model which is the first stage in critiquing this traditional/archaeological binary opposition. The Functions of the Derrida Archive are briefly introduced, and the whole issue of the philosophical receptions is related to Derrida's comments on "Colleges and Philosophy" and the essay "The Principle of Reason." As a depository of civic record and social history whose very name derives from the Greek word for town hall, the archive would seem to be a public entity, yet it is stocked with the personal, even intimate, artifacts of private lives. Collectively the contributors demonstrate the degree to which thinking about archives is embracing new realities and new possibilities. This book—the culmination of forty years of friendship between J. Hillis Miller and Jacques Derrida, during which Miller also closely followed all Derrida’s writings and seminars—is “for Derrida” in two senses. It is “for him,” dedicated to his memory. The chapters also speak, in acts of reading, as advocates for Derrida’s work. They focus especially on Derrida’s late work, including passages from the last, as yet unpublished, seminars. The chapters are “partial to Derrida,” on his side, taking his part, gratefully submitting themselves to the demand made by Derrida’s writings to be read—slowly, carefully, faithfully, with close attention to semantic detail. The chapters do not progress forward to tell a sequential story. They are, rather, a series of perspectives on the heterogeneity of Derrida’s work, or forays into that heterogeneity. The chief goal has been, to borrow a phrase from Wallace Stevens, “plainly to propound” what Derrida says. The book aims, above all, to render Derrida’s writings justice. It should be remembered, however, that, according to Derrida himself, every rendering of justice is also a transformative interpretation. Ghosts of Archive draws on the discourses of deconstruction, intersectionality and archetypal psychology to mount an argument that archive is fundamentally and structurally spectral and that the work of archive is justice. Drawing on more than 20 years of the author’s research on deconstruction and archive, the book posits archive as an essential resource for social justice activism and as a source, or location, of soul for individuals and communities. Through explorations of what Jacques Derrida termed ‘hauntology’, Harris invites a listening to the call for justice in conceptual spaces that are non-disciplinary. He argues that archive is both constructed in relation to and beset by ghosts – ghosts of the living, of the dead and of those not yet born – and that attention should be paid to them.
