The novel's plot revolves around four central characters: Professor Samuel and three of his students: Sara Adam, Quaid, and Alex Biden. Sara Adam, westernized in her mannerism and attire, is a product of cities elitist culture. A not-so-handsome Quaid hails from a village not so far away from that city while the handsome Alex Biden belongs to a rich family. The three young students at University study MA Sociology course and are tied into a love-triangle while Professor Samuel is the geometrician behind the triangle. During Professor Samuel's very first lecture Sara falls for Alex - a series of 'chance' happenings carry forward the plot.In the meantime, Quaid is also madly in love with Sara. Incidentally, Alex and Quaid are also roommates at the hostel. Quaid sees a chance for himself when Alex marries the girl his mother chose for him and leaves for London. Sara, heartbroken and dejected, move to Toronto but keeps traveling to the city she once studied sociology so that she can meet Quaid to talk about Alex. Such is her passion that she establishes a physical relationship with Quaid thinking that Alex and Quaid, being roommates, might have had a sexual relationship.Finally, Sara commits suicide while Quaid starts a relationship with a distant relative, Anna, who wants a divorce because her husband is not capable of fathering a child. He later also starts seeing Emily, a woman from the red-light area. While Anna returns to her husband, Emily is killed. Quaid, lonely and upset, finally agrees to marry a girl of his family's choice. However, his only condition is that the girl should be a virgin.
