Author Charles Ford continues to examine the philosophy of choice in the spirit of poetry by existentialism. Many themes are included, such as alienation, God, death, love, and so on. Here the list of themes is not exhausted. The roots of these choices are grounded in the will of the individual rather than his/her reason. He/she confronts problems that are seen in the world, so by his/her actions disclose human nature and reflect his/her latent dispositions. This is where inner choices must arise, so external choices may be seen as actions per se. When these state-of-affairs are closely examined, they disclosed aspects of the human condition. During the 1800s, the United States progressed at a remarkable rate. Commerce gave rise to regional specialization and contributed to the growth of cities. By 1860 the nation had prospered to the extent that it no longer depended on Europe to purchase its goods. Innovations in technology helped increase production, especially in textiles, and transportation projects helped reduce costs of certain products. As the country progressed, so did its citizenry and their attention to certain interests: movements on issues like women's rights, capital punishment, workers' rights, education, and mental health swept across the country. As these groups advanced their causes, a kind of journalism began to capture readers' attention: the exposZ. Although examples similar to it had appeared occasionally in various publications years before, it became more prevalent at the turn of the century. In this book Dr. Lampert is concerned with the possibility of a philosophy of history—that is to say, with the possibility of affirming a meaning in History. Such an affirmation must be made within the framework of Judeo-Christian thought, born of the expectation of the messianic kingdom. This is not an attempt to found a “scientific” theory of History, on the basis of general laws and principles: for man is too much an historical being and a part of History to be able to observe it from without. The course of historical Time is seen to depend on the intensity of Man’s experience, on human hopes, joys and sufferings; it is inseparable from the inner destiny of Man. Time is an eventful process, a drama having a beginning and an end. The end is manifested in the incarnate God who enters Time and identifies himself with Man, and yet in this self-identification transcends Time and Man. While the book is of special importance for theologians, the nature of its subject, and the historical situation in which we find ourselves, combine to give it a relevance to the problems of our time which should attract a much larger circle of readers.
