Book Synopsis We Are Many by : Edward S. Shapiro

The topics of Edward Shapiro's book span the gamut of the American Jewish experience: from the politics of American Jews, the nature of American Jewish identity, relations between Jews and blacks, and Jews and American capitalism. He discusses writer Herman Wouk; Patrick Buchanan and the Jews; John Higham's interpretation of American anti-Semitism, Nathan Glazer's view of American Orthodoxy, and the Jewishness of Sidney Hook. Of particular interest is the author's exploration of how American Jews have reconciled their dual identities as Americans and as Jews. These solutions has shaped the way Jews have voted, prayed, earned a living, married, and chosen a profession. America, Shapiro argues, has truly been different for Jews, but this difference has shaped the history of America's Jews in unexpected and ironic ways. The fact that Jews have risen rapidly up the economic and social ladder and have become politically influential has not eliminated their insecurity and the sense they have of themselves as a marginal group.

Book Synopsis For We are Sold, I and My People by : María Patricia Fernández-Kelly

On the basis of systematic research and personal experience, For We Are Sold, I and My People uncovers some of the social costs of modern production. Maria Patricia Fernandez-Kelly peels off the labels--"Made in Taiwan," "Assembled in Mexico"--and the trade names--RCA, Sony, General Motors, United Technologies, General Electric, Mattel, Chrysler, American Hospital Supply--to reveal the hidden human dimensions of present-day multinational manufacturing procedures. Focusing on Cuidad Juarez, located at the United States-Mexican border, Fernandez-Kelly examines the reality of maquiladoras, the hundreds of assembly plants that since the 1960s have been used by the Mexican government as part of its development strategy. Most maquiladoras function as subsidiaries of large U.S.-based corporations and a majority of the employees are women. Drawing from current knowledge in political economy and anthropology, this study focuses on one common denominator of the international division of labor--a growing proletariat of Third World women exploited by what some experts are calling "the global assembly line."

Book Synopsis Our Unity Is In The King Of Kings by : Molly Sutherland

Each of us has a destiny designed by God to fulfill. I believe God is calling His Church to unity. It is time that we prepare the ground for the Holy Spirit to fulfill Christ’s prayer before He went to the cross: “Father may they be one, just as You and I are One” (John 17:20-23). Jesus gave us a commandment, that we love one another as He does. Isn’t it time we obeyed this command so that the walls of separation could fall? The world needs to see us love as Jesus does so it can trust what we say. Could we be the generation known by our love? This book suggests ways in which God is asking us to prepare the ground for Jesus’ prayer to be fulfilled. UNITY. It will come through love, for God is love and He is one.
