In this collection of dark, supernatural tales the esteemed author D. K. Broster gave full reign to her vivid imagination. Sometimes—as in “The Window” or “The Pestering,” or “All Soul’s Day”—these are what we might call ‘explainable’ ghost stories: apparitions or hauntings whose origin is to be found in some violent or unjust action in the past. Other stories, “Couching at the Door” and “From the Abyss,” have little or no explanation, even in supernatural terms. Add to these an elegant reworking of the Persephone myth, “The Taste of Pomegranates,” the downright bloodthirsty “Clairvoyance,” and the psychological studies, “The Promised Land” and “The Pavement” which so well merit the heading ‘Madness and Obsession’, and you have a collection to disturb and unsettle the strongest nerves. Literary historian Jack Adrian describes Couching at the Door as “a pure masterwork, one of the most satisfying weird collections of the century”.

The volume On Stone and Scroll addresses biblical exegesis from the historical, archaeological, theological, and linguistic perspectives, and discusses many of the issues central to the interpretation of the Bible. It is written by colleagues and former students of Graham Davies in his honour on his retirement. It covers three main areas central to his work: inscriptional and archaeological, including socio-historical, studies; theological and exegetical studies, especially of Exodus and the Prophets; and semantic studies. A lasting focus of Graham’s work has been the combination of sources that he has utilised in the interpretation of the biblical text. His approach has been distinctive in biblical studies in his combining of archaeological, inscriptional, linguistic and theological evidence for a deeper understanding of text. His work has ranged from archaeological studies, through an edition of Hebrew inscriptions, contributions to Hebrew semantics and biblical theology, to exegesis of the Pentateuch and Prophets. The essays in this volume reflect that broad view of Old Testament study.

This theological commentary to the Rabbinic Midrash explores a simple proposition, in three parts: I. The reading of Scripture by principal parts of the Rabbinic Midrash is formed by compositions and composites that are animated by a cogent theological system. II. These primary components of the Midrash-compilations, further, are in part aimed at systematic demonstrations of theorems of a theological character. III. While forming a principal part of a large theological structure and system, each document is unique.
