This book brings to the fore some critical and fundamental issues plaguing the continent of Africa. It is a symbolic microcosm of challenging issues that Africa has and must address. Can Africa reverse the dark odds and can it move towards a united and integrated whole? The book explores the untold events and negative trends on the economic, social, political, humanitarian and environmental scene in Africa which leaves the international community perceiving Africa through darkened lenses. In this comprehensive, well-reasoned, critical, richly documented and boldly argued account on the Anglophone/Southern Cameroons/Ambazonia crisis, John Forje, a foremost scholar of identity politics in Cameroon, offers insightful explorations and explanations of histories and cultures of telling truth to power that have come to be associated with the people of the English-speaking region of Cameroon. The book offers realistic perspectives for the reinstitution of justice, equality, and democratic governance in a country of plenty but lavishing in endemic underdevelopment. Forje argues, among other things, that the current Anglophone crisis is the exhibition of one reality: that more than half-a-century after independence and unification, most Cameroonians are grossly disillusioned with their leaders. The country has had only two presidents since independence - Ahmadou Ahidjo and Paul Biya, with the latter occupying the presidency for 40 years since 1982 and counting. If something concrete is not undertaken now, the cleavages of division would widen to a dangerous end. Dark clouds hang over the future of the country. Uncertainty about national unity and stability is hardly a solid foundation for a country aspiring to be an emerging polity by 2035. There is an urgent need for a broader dimension of political dispensation in Cameroon. The book calls for proper soul-searching, critical analysis, and a new, comprehensive and visionary mindset to build a new country out of the ashes of the existing crumbling or failed polity. The need to re-rail Cameroon on the democratic train and on the path of sustainable development cannot be overemphasized.

Why is Africa, the cradle of Mankind, the second largest and second most populous continent in the world, endowed with abundant natural and mineral resources, the poorest on our planet? Who or what are responsible for this sad situation? Are the colonialists alone to blame? What has been the input of Africans in bringing about this predicament? Any viable and realistic solutions to the present and future daunting challenges or is the great continent consigned to decades of more deprivation ignorance, human misery and diseases? These are some of the pertinent questions that the author has tried to grapple with. He attempts to make the case that it is quite feasible in fifty years for all countries in Africa to be at least in the middle income group if certain actions and programs are adopted. The book has two parts: The first part describes Africa’s burdens, without the defensive shield that often blinds Africans to reflective insights. The second part offers practical solutions to address the enormous deficits in development that persist throughout black Africa. Devising and implementing lasting solutions that can lighten and eventually lift black Africa’s many burdens is a challenging prospect. But Africans must reverse the crippling effect of their burdens and negative influences, and lead the way to transform their lives.
