Abstract: This paper introduces the first effort to quantitatively document the small arms market by collating field reports and journalist accounts to produce a cross-country time-series price index of Kalashnikov assault rifles. A model of the small arms market is developed and empirically estimated to identify the key determinants of assault rifle prices. Variables which proxy the effective height of trade barriers for illicit trade are consistently significant in determining weapon price variation. When controlling for other factors, the collapse of the Soviet Union does not have as large an impact on weapon prices as is generally believed.

The politicians who sell fear to the American public never cease to repeat it: Assault rifles are the preferred weapons of mass shooters. While this statement is correct, it's also a good thing. In America's Nightmare, Dr. Travis Manroe presents a candid image of the endgame the United States faces as a result of illogical firearm regulations. He also offers an unsettling nonpartisan analysis of statistical and historical data that explains why assault rifles are a necessary evil. Through a careful but unorthodox method of examining the deadliest mass shootings, supported by some elementary math, Manroe reaches a conclusion that is both unprecedented and undeniable. Predicting that mass shootings will only continue to become more frequent and more deadly, he warns that there is a far deadlier monster lingering behind the scenes, one that will present itself if assault rifles are ever successfully banned.
