The essays collected in The Selfless Ego propose an innovative approach to one of the most fascinating aspects of Tibetan literature: life writing. Departing from past schemes of interpretation, this book addresses issues of literary theory and identity construction, eluding the strictures imposed by the adoption of the hagiographical master narrative as synonymous with the genre. The book is divided into two parts. Ideally conceived as an 'introduction' to traditional forms of life writing as expressed in Buddhist milieus, Part I. Memory and Imagination in Tibetan Hagiographical Writing centres on the inner tensions between literary convention and self-expression that permeate indigenous hagiographies, mystical songs, records of teachings, and autobiographies. Part II: Conjuring Tibetan Lives explores the most unconventional traits of the genre, sifting through the narrative configuration of Tibetan biographical writings as 'liberation stories' to unearth those fragments of life that compose an individual’s multifaceted existence. This volume is the first to approach Tibetan life writing from a literary and narratological perspective, encompassing a wide range of disciplines, themes, media, and historical periods, and thus opening new and vibrant areas of research to future scholarship across the Humanities. The chapters in this book were originally published as two special issues of Life Writing.

John Cord reconciles centuries of controversy about Biblical scripture to The Way of the Spirit regarding such central issues as God, Christ, Islam, Israel, the Temple Mount, religious terrorism, abortion, homosexuality, marriage, "666," secular progressives, the "war on Christmas," salvation, damnation, prayer, charity, tithing, baptism, reincarnation, predestination and the puzzling Book of Revelation. This book is intended to help illuminate your spiritual path. May it serve you well in seeking The Way, Truth and Life of the Spirit that brings Everlasting Peace. I have a whole new vision of the possibilities of the Bible now." Y.S. "I really cannot express how much your moderate, rational and overwhelmingly friendly view on things has changed my attitude towards true spirituality and made me realize that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you " N.S. "Your interpretation of the Bible is a breath of fresh air. Your non-literal view of the Bible would be considered heresy or satanic by some. Thank you for taking a stand and teaching a message so sound that it does not require a man to be fearful, ignorant or brainwashed to believe." M.T. "I have fought a spiritual battle in my head and heart for years. Finally, your teachings have brought peace to me and I no longer feel that I am doomed for not following a particular religion. My mind is healthier than it has been in years. I cannot begin to tell you the stability I have been feeling." K.K. "I am reminded every time I read your work to be thankful that people like you exist and working to spread the truth to all who will hear. And in this I know I am not alone. Thank you." A.W. "I am in much agreement with your vision and method of eloquence in communicating your thoughts on all that is relevant. You are able to advise others, justify perceptions and provoke thought and contemplation of realness without ever losing your tone of smile." D.S. "This is great, John, I love what you do. The fact that what you're teaching is SO obvious to so many, I see as a really good sign." D.M. "I praise God for the enlightenment you share. Great work, great mind, and courageous in the Spirit of Love to teach the true meaning of what God is all about." H.F."

Attention, self-consciousness, insight, wisdom, emotional maturity: how Zen teachings can illuminate the way our brains function and vice-versa. When neurology researcher James Austin began Zen training, he found that his medical education was inadequate. During the past three decades, he has been at the cutting edge of both Zen and neuroscience, constantly discovering new examples of how these two large fields each illuminate the other. Now, in Selfless Insight, Austin arrives at a fresh synthesis, one that invokes the latest brain research to explain the basis for meditative states and clarifies what Zen awakening implies for our understanding of consciousness. Austin, author of the widely read Zen and the Brain, reminds us why Zen meditation is not only mindfully attentive but evolves to become increasingly selfless and intuitive. Meditators are gradually learning how to replace over-emotionality with calm, clear objective comprehension. In this new book, Austin discusses how meditation trains our attention, reprogramming it toward subtle forms of awareness that are more openly mindful. He explains how our maladaptive notions of self are rooted in interactive brain functions. And he describes how, after the extraordinary, deep states of kensho-satori strike off the roots of the self, a flash of transforming insight-wisdom leads toward ways of living more harmoniously and selflessly. Selfless Insight is the capstone to Austin's journey both as a creative neuroscientist and as a Zen practitioner. His quest has spanned an era of unprecedented progress in brain research and has helped define the exciting new field of contemplative neuroscience.

As a society, we have become so accustomed to ego-based emotions like misery, worry, fear, and conflict that we believe these are the norm. This is not the truth, however. We were born to be happy and love unconditionally—it's the gift of self. How can we return to a non-linear state of happiness and peace when everything around us says that nothing is more important than me, me, me? The Ego-Less SELF is a journey of discovery and a return to the self by "one of the most influential clinical and spiritual teachers in North America." It looks closely at the notion of "spiritual transformation" by first showing readers how the ego develops over time to cause suffering in our lives. Once the ego is stripped away, then the historical pathways to the self—heart, mind and action—can begin to work. With a broad range of spiritual influences, from the Bible to the Dalai Lama, personal stories of enlightenment, and real employable strategies and techniques, The Ego-Less SELF sets out to deflate the ego to let the true self shine through. Readers will begin to learn how to get rid of resentments, surrender the ego's unconscious programs for happiness, and employ simple techniques to increase contact with consciousness through the right-brain hemisphere. The road to self is not about trying to acquire anything but rather the willingness to surrender all of our culture's egotistic ways, thus taking us back to that which we are—the purest self. The Ego-Less SELF is the GPS for the journey.
