Excerpt from The Problem of War and Its Solution The intention behind these pages is to demolish this fatalistic doctrine and to substitute a reasonable theory more in accordance with the facts. As might be expected, once the real factors of the problem are known the solution is at hand for those who are not dismayed by the bogies of tradition. At this time when all earnest men are looking for a stable foundation upon which the edifice of a durable peace may be erected, my hope is that this book will usefully contribute towards the attainment of their desires. Criticism, hostile or otherwise, is welcome, because honest discussion speeds the day when there shall be peace on earth and good will towards men. Excerpt from The Great Cycle: The Solution of the Problem of War, an Abridgement of the Manuscript in Five Volumes, Bearing the Title of the World Question and Its Answer The prevailing war differs from all past wars. It involves the nations of Europe no less than Asia and of North, Central and South America. It incorporates in its activities the great continents of Australasia and Africa and their islands. It, in short, compasses the whole world, and is properly called the World War. The world, therefore, being at war, if we look to see what this means, we shall perceive that it is really the human race that is at war. Now, since war consists of combat, and since combat entailsthe active presence Of contestants, so, in order that a contest may exist, there must be some Object which, in the minds of the contend ers, constitutes an issue. There is, therefore, in this war somewhere an issue, but where it is the world does not understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Genesis of the World War: An Introduction to the Problem of War Guilt This book is frankly what the title implies: an introduction to the study of the problem of the responsibility for the World War. It aims to present the subject as it now stands on the basis of the secret documents published since 1917 and Of the monographic literature which has ap peared in this same period, analyzing and as sessing the significance of this new documentary material. It is the purpose of the writer to arouse interest in the subject and to create a general conviction that there is here a major in ternational problem, the nature and importance of which are scarcely realized by even the aver age educated American. If this primary pur pose Of the book is realized, it is hoped that it will serve a second function equally well, namely, to act as a guide to the study of the more tech nical and voluminous literature. Excerpt from A League of Nations The war has called forth some good books on the future international organization of the world, and others on the settlement of the war itself. To my thinking, these two questions are a single problem which must be solved as a whole. The task which for us exceeds all others in importance, and must be made to include all others, is the making of conditions which promise security from further wars. The settlement of the national, colonial, and economic questions involved in this war, must be a settlement which will help the creation, and ensure the harmonious working of a League of Nations founded to maintain peace. In this book I have tried to consider how far such a League of Nations as President Wilson has proposed, can guarantee the security of Europe. Its success will depend, not merely on the wise drafting of its constitution, but upon the solution reached in the war-settlement of our problems of nationality, colonial expansion, international trade, sea-power, and alliances. I have groped in the following chapters for an answer to this question: Under what political and economic conditions would the creation of a League of Nations be a hopeful adventure? The book was written during the summer of 1916 and finished in the last days of October. Much has happened since the manuscript was completed - the fall of the Coalition Cabinet, the German offer of negotiation, and the entry of America into the war. Excerpt from American's Relations to the Great War The time has at last come when a sane word may be spoken on this subject from an objective point of view with some prospect of meeting, in some quarters at least, with an impartial hearing. There can be little question now that the original plan of Great Britain for fighting this war was to have France and Russia do the work upon the land of destroying the armies of the Central Powers, while she would starve out their entire population, civil as well as military, women as well as men, infants as well as adults, by means of her superior naval power.
