Excerpt from The Literary Souvenir Thus ended the pride both of Heroncliff and Hazledell, which may still be seen, from each other, about a mile apart, shooting up a few parti-coloured walls from their untrimmed wildernesses, and seeming, like two desperate combatants, to stand to the last extremity; neither of them cheered by a Sign of life, excepting the jackdaws which sit perched upon the dead tips of the old ash trees. Excerpt from The Literary Souvenir: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1838 I gazed anxiously around. I was alone. The gentle rippling Of the sea could not be heard in the altitude Of my position; the clouds sailed along the sky, and the wild birds flew past me as I gazed - not a sign Of humanity could I perceive, except the distant ships as they glided slowly on their way. After some little wandering to and fro, I Observed a scarcely discernible path along the edge Of the cliff. Tum ing to the right, at a venture, I followed the sinuosities of this footway for a considerable distance without seeing either a public or private house, or any thing in the shape Of man. Excerpt from The Literary Souvenir: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1840 The ringing of the passing bell and the dashing of a down coming steam boat, as she glanced rapidly past, attracted my attention from the old Dutchman, and I found myself opposite the Palisades. The wind had partially cleared the river of the fog, but the heights were covered with a nightcap of cloud. Occasionally, a gust of wind would dash a body of vapor against a jutting crag, and the thick white fog would split into many pieces - like the shattering of a solid body. On the bosom of the iron-bound shore, clouds of a round and rolling form, protected by some projecting rock from the force of old Boreas, that blustering railer, tumbled gracefully along lagging most lazily in the clefts of the hill, or sporting up and down the rain-worn gullies in its side, till a fresh puff of wind invaded their retreat, and dispersed the airy veil. Excerpt from The Literary Souvenir: Or, Cabinet of Poetry and Romance TO facilitate this arrangement, it is of great importance to me to receive the contributions Of such of my friends as may be disposed to afford me their aid, at as early a period of the year as may accord with their conveni ence. I have to regret that several highly interesting communications reached me too late to be included in the present volume. Among these are articles from Mr. J. H. Wiifen, Mr. David Lyndsay, and the authors Of Gilbert Earle, Brother Jonathan, Frankenstein, and A Traveller's Tale. Excerpt from The Maple-Leaf, or Canadian Annual: A Literary Souvenir for 1849 The reader who has yet to enjoy the pleasure of visiting the fair city of the West, whose name heads our article, will perhaps fail to obtain from our frontispiece an adequate idea of the attractions of one of the most admired scenes in Canada. The artist has taken his sketch from an elevation commanding a bird's-eye view of the city, which lies spread out like a map before him; but so much of the picture is taken in at a glance - over such a wide extent of hill and forest, water and plain, does the eye range, that in order to compress it within the small space our sheet affords, the objects are so diminished as'to mar in some degree the proper effect, and, faithful and well - executed as the picture is, it leaves the chief beauties ofthe scene to be discovered by an actual visit to the place itself. It is, we trust, unnecessary to inform even the English reader, of the whereabouts of Hamilton and Burlington Bay; but it is not every one informed upon this preliminary, who has also had an opportunity of witnessing the pleasant view which opens to you as you enter the harbour, or look down upon the lake from the commanding elevation of the Mountain.
