Excerpt from New General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 8 of 12: Projected and Partly Arranged Gerbier, (peter John Baptist, ) a celebrated French lawyer, distinguished for the eloquence of his pleadings, born at Rennes in 1725. After a careful domestic education under able masters invited from Holland, he was sent to the college dc Beauvais at Paris, where he pursued his studies under MM. Coflin and Rivard. At the age of seventeen he took his degree; but he did not commence prsc tice as an advocate until his twenty seventh year, when be excited general admiration. One of the most famous causes in which he was concerned was that of the brothers Lyoncy, merchants of Marseilles, against the J esuits, which issued in the overthrow of that society. No writings of Gerbier remain but his oratory is said to be unsurpassed in the annals of the French bar. He died in 1788. Excerpt from The General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 8 Cabasilas (nicholas), nephew of the preceding, and successor in the archbishopric of Thessalonica, flou rished under the reign of Cantacuzenus, and had all his uncle's prejudices against the Latins. He also wrote On the procession 'of the Holy Ghost; and an exposition of the Liturgy, in which he delivers the doctrine of the Greek church concerning the mass; and which was printed in Latin at Venice, in 1545, and at Antwerp in 1560; and in Greek and Latin in the Bibliotheca Patrum, Paris, 16211. In the same Bibliotheca, is also included his Life of Jesus Christ, translated into Latin, and sepa rately printed at Ingolstadt, in 1604. A translation of his work against Usury, is also contained in the Biblio theca. In the sciences of mathematics and astronomy, he is said to have surpassed all his contemporaries.
