A young Chippewa Indian from Minnesota collected these legends and stories told by the Tanaina Indians of southwestern Alaska. Called suk-tus ("legend-stories") and stemming from the seventeenth century, they are anecdotal narratives centered on a particular animal or animals common to the Tanaina country. Thus the tales are peopled with foxes, beavers, wolverines, porcupines, and other animals, some of which disguise themselves in human form for sinister purposes and all of which have human desires and weaknesses. According to the author, some embellishments in the stories certainly resulted from contact with Western civilization, particularly during the Russian and early fur-trading periods, but basically they are aboriginal Tanaina and are told as they have been handed down through oral tradition. Originally, suk-tus were related to entertain and instruct, and they are as apt to do so for today’s audiences as for yesterday’s, reflecting both the outlook of their originators and the nature of the environment in which they lived.

While sitting poolside near her grandmother’s West Palm Beach condo, young millennial Vanessa overhears a strange conversation: “What, you want to have phone sex?” Accustomed to little more than old folks with their card games and early bird dinners, Vanessa is shocked—but intrigued—and soon makes the acquaintance of Michelle. As it turns out, Michelle is a widow trying online dating, while Vanessa is single and still recovering from tragic loss. Their morning meetings become a comforting daily occurrence. Separated by decades in age, the two women are extremely similar in many other ways and become fast friends. For Michelle, being single, no matter what age, is a roller coaster: one can accept the excitement and unpredictability or get off the ride. Michelle has learned to embrace the ride, and she encourages Vanessa to do the same, no matter past trauma. Michelle even gifts Vanessa with her memoir, Keep Walking, based on her life as a widow and her baby boomer dating experience. At home in New York, Vanessa will have decisions to make as she has a new job waiting and a possible relationship in the wings. Michelle’s insights and optimism change everything. Surviving life is a challenge, but to thrive, young Vanessa must find her authentic self, all with the help of a serendipitous friendship by a Florida pool. The Unexpected Connection is a provocative book filled with timely stories, insightful reflections, and humor that readers of all ages, gender, and personal status can relate to. As the tales are told, the reader becomes witness to the inner struggles and ultimate growth both Michelle and Vanessa experience. As with The Dance Partner we may love to dance but finding the right partner is a challenge. F.J. Strauss- Author, Life Coach, Professor

King Mouse finds his authority in question when his subjects find crowns of their own. A gentle and humorous modern fable about imaginative play and kindness in the tradition of classics like Little Bear and Frog and Toad. A sweet, thoughtful tale of friendship, sharing and play, King Mouse begins when a mouse comes upon a tiny crown in the grass. The mouse puts the crown on his head, and when a bear subsequently comes upon him and asks if he's king, the mouse responds "Yes." This diminutive monarch settles into his new role very comfortably . . . until a snake comes upon a crown and claims she is queen. The mouse is not amused, especially when one by one the other animals find crowns and claim they are kings too. But when the bear can't find a crown, King Mouse make a most surprising decision. This inspired collaboration between an award-winning author and debut picture book illustrator Dena Seiferling is quietly profound in its simplicity and has the feeling of a modern classic.
