The book focuses on the recent technology and advancement in structural integrity and monitoring systems in composite materials. Composites have been widely used in automotive, aerospace and wind turbine industries, therefore it is important to develop state of the art technology to monitor and manage the damage tolerance and durability. This book explores the challenge of a monitoring system in a composite and presents a real-time system which has advantages for damage detection, localization, assessment and life prediction compared to the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). It will also present the modelling and prediction of failure in a composite material based on computational analysis of the characteristics and properties of the composite material based on fiber and matrix properties. This book will benefit lecturers, students, researchers, engineers and industrialist who are working in the civil, mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace and wind turbine industries.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a relatively new and alternative way of non-destructive inspection (NDI). It is the process of implementing a damage detection and characterization strategy for composite structures. The basis of SHM is the application of permanent fixed sensors on a structure, combined with minimum manual intervention to monitor its structural integrity. These sensors detect changes to the material and/or geometric properties of a structural system, including changes to the boundary conditions and system connectivity, which adversely affect the system's performance. This book's primary focus is on the diagnostics element of SHM, namely damage detection in composite structures. The techniques covered include the use of Piezoelectric transducers for active and passive Ultrasonics guided waves and electromechanical impedance measurements, and fiber optic sensors for strain sensing. It also includes numerical modeling of wave propagation in composite structures. Contributed chapters written by leading researchers in the field describe each of these techniques, making it a key text for researchers and NDI practitioners as well as postgraduate students in a number of specialties including materials, aerospace, mechanical and computational engineering. Contents: Damage Detection and Characterization with Piezoelectric Transducers — Active Sensing (Z Sharif Khodaei and M H Aliabadi)Modeling Guided Wave Propagation in Composite Structures Using Local Interaction Simulation Approach (Yanfeng Shen and Carlos E S Cesnik)Design and Development of a Phased Array System for Damage Detection in Structures (Bruno Rocha, Mehmet Yildiz & Afzal Suleman)Degradation Detection in Composite Structures with PZT Transducers (Wiesław M Ostachowicz, Paweł H Malinowski & Tomasz Wandowski)Numerical Modelling of Wave Propagation in Composite Structures (Sourav Banerjee)SHM of Composite Structures by Fibre Optic Sensors (Alfredo Guemes)Impact Detection and Identification with Piezoceramic Sensors — Passive Sensing (Z Sharif Khodaei and M H Aliabadi) Readership: Researchers and NDI practitioners as well as postgraduate students in a number of specialties including materials, aerospace, mechanical and computational engineering. Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites: Innovative Modelling Methods and Intelligent Design presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase the fundamental issues and practical problems that affect the development and exploitation of large composite structures. As predicting precisely where cracks may develop in materials under stress is an age old mystery in the design and building of large-scale engineering structures, the burden of testing to provide "fracture safe design" is imperative. Readers will learn to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials. This comprehensive text provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking and how these phenomena can affect reliability, life expectancy, and the durability of structures. Aerospace structural design, especially for large aircraft, is an empirical pursuit dominated by rules of thumb and often-painful service experiences. Expertise on traditional materials is not transferable to “new materials, processes and structural concepts. This is because it is not based on or derived from well-defined measures of safety. This book addresses the need for safe innovation based on practical, explicit structural safety constraints for use in innovative structures of the future where guiding service experience is non-existent. The book covers new ground by the demonstration of ways to satisfy levels of safety by focusing on structural integrity; and complementing the lack of service experience with risk management, based on flexible inspection methods recognizing that safety is a function of time. Fundamentally the book shoes demonstrates how safety methods can be made available to the engineering community without requiring huge statistical databases to establish internal and external loads distributions for use in reliability analysis. An essential title for anyone working on structural integrity, or composite structures. It will be of equal interest to aerospace engineers and materials scientists working in academia, industry and government. Demonstrates a practically manageable way to produce safe innovation using composites in environments with no service experience New approach to a subject that has not previously been treated in a holistic manner This book could not have come at a more topical time, Boeing are currently launching the first commercial plane made entirely of composite materials The focus of this book is Composite Materials but other fields of innovation could be treated in the same manner

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an automated approach to determine any changes in the integrity of mechanical systems. The SHM system gives information in real time and online. The book explains and discusses the advantages of Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) techniques. Special focus is placed on applications of structural health monitoring of bio-composite turbine blades for vertical axis wind turbines.
