Mounting a show hasn't gotten any easier since ancient Greek stagehands rigged the first deus ex machina a few thousand years ago. Working in the theater has plenty of challenges, both old and new. But now, here is a collection of advice on modern stagecraft that can help round off the sharp edges. Written in short chunks for anyone interested in the best professional standards, this book ranges from how to not lose your tools when traveling, to using spreadsheet calculators for fast and accurate layout. In addition to age-old advice, like how to remove floor scuffs while saving your back, new material has also been specifically developed for this book. This includes charts of useful information, new tools, and even a section of trivia dedicated to working backstage. In recognition that good advice comes from a good community, a donation is made to the Behind the Scenes charity for every purchase. Contact information to submit your own tip or trick for the next edition of this book can be found at the start of the book. Learn more at modernstagecraft.com

In 1922-23, Chinese students in Victoria, British Columbia, went on strike to protest a school board's attempt to impose segregation. Their resistance was unexpected and runs against the grain of mainstream accounts of Asian exclusion, which tend to ignore the agency of the excluded. In Contesting White Supremacy, Timothy Stanley combines Chinese sources and perspectives with an innovative theory of racism and anti-racism to explain the strike and construct an alternative reading of racism in British Columbia. His work demonstrates that education was an arena in which white supremacy confronted Chinese nationalist schooling and where parents and students contested racism by constructing a new category Chinese Canadian to define their identity.
