Perhaps its words are an imitation from the Domine Salvum of the Catholic Church. It is, however, asserted by Chappel, and also by Dr. Fink, a German musical antiquary, that Dr. Henry Carey, an English poet and musician (1696- 17430, was author both of the words and the melody. The anthem was composed, it is said, in honour of a birthday of George II., and was performed for the first time at a dinner given on that occasion in 1740 by the Mercer's Company in London.
