Excerpt from Songs of England's Glory There has always been much disputation concerning the origin and authorship of the National Anthem. Perhaps its words are an imitation from the Domine Salvum of the Catholic Church. It is, however, asserted by Chappel, and also by Dr. Fink, a German musical antiquary, that Dr. Henry Carey, an English poet and musician (1696- 17430, was author both of the words and the melody. The anthem was composed, it is said, in honour of a birthday of George II., and was performed for the first time at a dinner given on that occasion in 1740 by the Mercer's Company in London. God save our gracious King, Long live our noble King, - God save the King! Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, - God save the King! O Lord, our God, arise, Scatter his enemies, And make them fall! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The Cavalier Songs and Ballads of England From 1642 to 1684 N 0 new ones of the kind are made except as miser able parodies and burlesques that may amuse sober costermongers and half-drunken men about town, who frequent music saloons at midnight, but which are offensive to every one else. Such genuine old ballads as remain in the popular memory are either fast dying out, or relate exclusively to the never-e to-be-superseded topics of love, war, and wine. The people of our day have little heart or appreciation for song, except in Scotland and Ireland. 'england and America are too prosaic and too busy, and the masses, notwithstanding all their supposed advan tages in education, are much too vulgar to delight in either song or ballad that rises to the dignity of poet ry. They appreciate the buffooneries of the Negro Minstrelsy, and the inanities and the vapidities of sentimental love songs, but the elegance of such writers as Thomas Moore, and the force 0 4. First published in 1943, this autobiography is also a superb portrait of America's Depression years, by the folk singer, activist, and man who saw it all. Woody Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and traveled this whole country over—not by jet or motorcycle, but by boxcar, thumb, and foot. During the journey of discovery that was his life, he composed and sang words and music that have become a national heritage. His songs, however, are but part of his legacy. Behind him Woody Guthrie left a remarkable autobiography that vividly brings to life both his vibrant personality and a vision of America we cannot afford to let die. “Even readers who never heard Woody or his songs will understand the current esteem in which he’s held after reading just a few pages… Always shockingly immediate and real, as if Woody were telling it out loud… A book to make novelists and sociologists jealous.” —The Nation
