In 1928, at the age of nineteen, college student August Derleth wrote to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, asking him whether he planned to produce more Sherlock Holmes stories, and announcing that, if Sir Arthur did not, he, Derleth, would begin a series of pastiches of his own. Sir Arthur promised nothing, and Derleth went ahead, creating Solar Pons. Between Pons' first published appearance in 1929 until Derleth's death in 1971, the bite of the Sherlockian bug prompted him to write more than seventy Solar Pons adventures in the best Holmes tradition. Throughout, he devoted endless hours to research and authentication of details into recreating the London milieu of Pons. Now, restored from the original 1973 Mycroft and Moran edition, Solar Pons is back! Join Pons and Dr. Parker in The Chronicles of Solar Pons as they investigate the terrifying events of "The Missing Tenants", the suspenseful matter of "The Orient Express", and the nearly perfect adventure of "The Unique Dickensians".For many years, it was believed the Pontine Canon would end with the publication of The Chronicles of Solar Pons in 1973. But over the years, additional material was discovered in various places, including obscure publications and Derleth's own files. Now, thanks to Derleth's heirs and the August Derleth Estate, which still retains full ownership of Solar Pons and these apocryphal adventures, this new easily available and affordable collection has been made possible.Once again, the game is afoot!

When August Derleth died on July 4, 1971, he had written and finished revising all the stories for The Chronicles of Solar Pons. The manuscript lay on his desk, ready for final typing. This, then, is the... last major collection of the Pontine series. However much the reader may regret bidding goodbye to a cherished friend of more than forty years' constance, the ten tales presented here make for a fine and fitting exit. The range and variety of the puzzle-problems are wide. There is the classic flight-and-pursuit motif of the espionage thriller, The Adventure of the Orient Express. The strangeness of The Adventure of the Benin Bronze and the grim search in The Adventure of the Missing Tenants are matched by the long and tangled web behind The Adventure of the Red Leech.Whether enjoyed as pure entertainment, or for the exercise of nimble minds in an attempt to outwit Solar Pons, the reader will find in these pages an additional reward: the easy flow of a prose style that is the hallmark of a superior craftsman.- From the original 1973 Mycroft & Moran edition dust jacket

Horace G. Danner’s A Thesaurus of English Word Roots is a compendium of the most-used word roots of the English language. As Timothy B. Noone notes in his foreword: “Dr. Danner’s book allows you not only to build up your passive English vocabulary, resulting in word recognition knowledge, but also gives you the rudiments for developing your active English vocabulary, making it possible to infer the meaning of words with which you are not yet acquainted. Your knowledge can now expand and will do so exponentially as your awareness of the roots in English words and your corresponding ability to decode unfamiliar words grows apace. This is the beginning of a fine mental linguistic library: so enjoy!” In A Thesaurus of English Word Roots, all word roots are listed alphabetically, along with the Greek or Latin words from which they derive, together with the roots’ original meanings. If the current meaning of an individual root differs from the original meaning, that is listed in a separate column. In the examples column, the words which contain the root are then listed, starting with their prefixes, for example, dysacousia, hyperacousia. These root-starting terms then are followed by terms where the root falls behind the word, e.g., acouesthesia and acoumeter. These words are followed by words where the root falls in the middle or the end, as in such terms as bradyacusia and odynacusis.. In this manner, A Thesaurus of English Word Roots places the word in as many word families as there are elements in the word. This work will interest linguists and philologists and anyone interested in the etymological aspects of English language.

First Published in 2007. Compiling the results from contemporary and exciting areas of research into one single important volume, this book stands ahead of its field in providing a comprehensive one-stop Handbook reference of biblical interpretation. Examining a wide range of articles on many of the recognized interpreters including Augustine, Luther and Calvin, up to the modern figures of Martin Hengel and T.W. Manson, Porter expertly combines the study of biblical interpretation with the examination of the theological and philosophical preconceptions that have influenced it, and surveys the history of interpretation from different perspectives. Key perspectives studied include: the historical dimension; addressing how interpretation has developed at various periods of time; from early Jewish exegesis to the historical-critical method; the conceptual approach; looks at the various schools of thought that have generated biblical interpretation, and compares and contrasts competing conceptual models of interpretation; the personal perspective; addresses the reality of biblical interpretation by individuals who have helped plot the course of theological development; With relevant bibliographies and a guide to further reading, this Dictionary will be an extremely important reference held for many years, not only by libraries, but also by students, scholars, clergy and teachers of this fascinating and high-profile subject.
