Each anatomic site in the Topography Sect. of the Internat. Class. of Disease for Oncology -- 3rd Ed. (ICD-0-3) has a corresponding summary staging scheme. Certain specific histologic types also have specific staging schemes. In some cases, sites which previously had separate guides (such as the segments of the colon) have a single staging scheme (colon), whereas some sites which previously had a single guide (e.g., larynx) have separate schemes for each sub-site of the larynx.

The American Joint Committee on Cancer's Cancer Staging Manual is used by physicians throughout the world to diagnose cancer and determine the extent to which cancer has progressed.
