The mathematical models of productivity theory allows for the productivity rate of manufacturing machines and systems to be modelled with results that are validated by their actual output. This book presents the analytical approaches and methods to define maximal productivity rate of manufacturing machines and systems, based on the parameters of technological processes, structural design, reliability of mechanisms, and management systems.

From the automotive industry to the semiconductor industry, manufacturers are suffering from an overabundance of automation methods that they cannot fully comprehend or afford, and glamorous leadership techniques that are simply not sustainable. In this respect, management has lost its way. Beyond World-Class Productivity shows why a return to traditional tools and the power of people can help companies meet today’s challenges in the manufacturing sector. Beyond World-Class Productivity gives readers a balance of essential information, theory and case studies. Readers can expect to gain new insights into engineering approaches to productivity, profitability and real or non-real gain, including: • useful tools for industrial engineering • effectiveness in unit labor costs; • feasibility studies • work simplification; and • developing mind innovation. Practical examples and their accompanying commentary come from the author’s 40 years of real-world experience on the shop floor and in the boardroom. Figures are also provided to illustrate actual productivity results from real companies. Both managers and engineers can appreciate Beyond World-Class Productivity as an enlightening guide to the improvement of productivity and profitability within the manufacturing sector.

Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing industries have accumulated a huge experience in creating different machines and systems for fabricating various goods, work parts, and products. All these diverse machines and systems, with different designs to solve pivoted economic problems, increased the productivity rate of manufacturing processes and generated high-quality products. In the area of productivity theory for industrial engineering, there are numerous publications that describe the fundamental approaches and the mathematical models of productivity rate for the different designs of industrial machines and systems. Known theories consider the physical productivity rate as the number of products fabricated over a given time (ASME) that is a component of economic productivity. However, known mathematical models are simplified with assumptions and not well developed analytically, which can lead to severe errors in computing the output of manufacturing systems. Modern industrial machines and systems are complex in design and in structure with serial, parallel, and serial-parallel arrangements, and any failure of any component leads to downtime of expensive production systems. For this reason, industries need a productivity theory that enables accurate predicting of the output of manufacturing systems at the preliminary stages. Key features Offers fundamental principles of productivity theory for industrial machines and systems based on mathematics, technology, design, reliability, probability, and management Presents the conceptual principles of productivity theory for industrial machines and systems Provides methods for computing productivity losses in real industrial environments Closes the gap between theory and practice for computing productivity rates of manufacturing systems Incudes a comparative analysis of productivity rates for manufacturing systems of serial, parallel, and serial-parallel arrangements Productivity Theory for Industrial Engineering presents analytical approaches and methods to define maximal productivity rates, optimal machining regimes, and optimal structure of manufacturing machines and systems based on the parameters of technological processes, structural design, reliability of mechanisms, and management systems. This book uses productivity theory for solving productivity problems and can also be used for complex approaches for sustainable improvement of production processes.

A wide spectrum of tools and techniques exists to manage business cost, output, utilization, cycle time, performance. This objective book explains strategy, benefits and application of tools, and how they fit and reinforce each other Basic IE principles apply widely, to support efficiency and productivity not only in manufacturing but also in the office, lab, maintenance shop, warehouse; service industries, military, medical services, construction. The 400 plus pages of this book present: Seven chapters on Industrial Engineering. Theory, practice, application; how it all fits together, payback of 10 times and how to get it, a sample charter. Four chapters on industrial engineering within a broader management structure; labor, materials, overhead, risk management. Eleven chapters on Cost Reduction; Survive, Recover, or Thrive. Basics, management, accounting, cherry pick, beyond cherry picking, do operating practices interfere, value added, motivation. Thirteen chapters on Work Measurement. What, Why, and How-To. Measurement techniques, incentives, time study, work sampling, construction piece rates, a model plan to establish work measurement, methods checklists, glossary, useful forms. Twenty seven chapters on Plant layout, facility design, floor planning. Benefits, concepts, work flow and productivity, sequence, relocation, relationships between elements of a layout, master plan, many tools to use, glossary. Sixteen chapters on Facility Relocation, Merger, and Consolidation. A plant instead of or in addition to, is it time to expand? to relocate? Justification, the relocation marketplace, incentives and taxes, site search, confidentiality, sequence. Examples of layouts within different building shapes. Five chapters on Capacity, Utilization, Constraints. Determine constraints, manage them, optimize capacity. Four chapters on Lean, or the Toyota Production System (although the author does not claim to be an expert). Lean Manufacturing and its predecessors, Just In Time or Just In Case, What the real Lean experts say, push or pull supply chain. A chapter, Made in (the name of your country here). Good reasons to keep manufacturing near the home market. For management and for the practitioner, IE Theory, Practice and Application presents what, why, benefits to expect, how to manage and how to practice the discipline; with checklists; and forms. Practical, real-life actions, on the production floor but also from the boardroom, are suggested to support business and production management, productivity and capacity. IE tools do not all perform the same function. Furthermore, none of these tools is automatically valuable or useful; each has pros and cons as you consider potential cost and benefit in your circumstance. Select those actions that will bring the most benefit to your circumstances and objectives and which can be implemented by your organization. "Most benefit" often refers to cost but not always; targets may in your situation include output volume now or future growth, fast reaction time, customer service, new products, new technology, quality, technical innovation or excellence, market share. IE tools can help attain all of these objectives.

The study was concerned with the problem of manufacturing engineering and its position as a production science, as well as the unique position of the manufacturing engineer. The first purpose of the study was to define the manufacturing engineering function between the extremes of management and labor. The second purpose of the study was to develop a general theory of manufacturing engineering science. Finally, the third purpose and concern of this work is to make more lucid the relationship of manufacturing engineering to industrial productivity.
