Electromagnetic fields are generated by wires or electrically powered devices, and dissipate quickly, like light. When assessing potential impact of EMFs on health, scientists focus mainly on magnetic fields produced by power lines and electric appliances, which can pass through the body and generate small electric currents. After examining more than 500 studies spanning 17 years of research, this study concluded that there was no clear, convincing evidence to show that the residential exposures to EMFs are a threat to human health. Describes the analysis and conclusions of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) regarding possible health effects from ELF-EMF (magnetic field) exposures. The NIEHS carried out a hazard evaluation of ELF-EMF exposure that examined both historical and novel scientific evidence on possible health and biological effects at a series of open, scientific meetings. The scientific evidence suggesting that ELF-EMF exposures pose any health risk is weak, and there is a lack of connection between the human data and the experimental data (animal and mechanistic).
