The 32 papers in this volume examine the mode and nature of igneous, metamorphic, tectonic, sedimentological, and biological processes associated with the evolution of oceanic crust in different tectonic settings in Earth history as revealed in various ophiolites and ophiolite belts around the world, and the geodynamic significance of these ophiolites in the evolution of different orogenic systems. Divided into six thematic sections, the book presents a wealth of new data and syntheses from mainly Phanerozoic ophiolites around the world.

This volume celebrates Professor Ian Gass, covering many of the subjects which most interested him, especially processes operating in oceanic crust. The introductory papers examine evolution of magmas from mantle melting to eruption. A central section concerns ophiolite complexes. Several papers focus on different aspects of the Troodos ophiolite complex in Cyprus. In addition, ophiolites are reviewed and examined. A further section concentrates on tectonics and the genesis of magmas associated with collision and subduction. This contrasts with continental rifting and the effects of mantle plumes.

Recent publications advocate derivative catastrophist interpretations of PT. Catastrophist and uniformitarian interpretations share many premises and conclusions. Therefore, a concise analysis of more voluminous evidence for and against uniformitarian PT can be used as a shortcut to assess the credibility of Catastrophic Plate Tectonics (CPT). Ongoing questions regarding uniformitarian PT offer reasons for skepticism of CPT until a more thorough evaluation is complete.
