An international workshop on the scientific basis for the management of the penaeid shrimp provided the material for this book which gives a valuable summary of the unique problems of the shrimp fisheries. It also gives useful background information and discusses the problems of scientists and managers in a constructive way and points to areas where future work is necessary. Specific aims of the conference were: to identify the specific features of sampling schemes used to obtain length-frequency data for stock assessment; to review length-based methodologies for stock assessment of fish and aquatic invertebrates, with particular reference to their precision and accuracy; to review and test computer programs implementing length-based methods.

St Lucia is the world's oldest protected estuary and Africa's largest estuarine system. It is also the centerpiece of South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and has been a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1986.
