May seem to impeach the universality of this rule, but do not so in fact. For in neither is it God who speaks, nor yet messengers of his, delivering his counsel; but men, and from an earthly standing-point, not a heavenly. Jotham will teach the men of Shechem their folly, not their sin, in making Abimelech king over them; the fable never lifting itself to the rebuke of sin, as it is sin - this lesson lies outside of its sphere - but only in so far as it is also folly. And Jehoash, in the same way, would make Amaziah see his presumption and pride, in challenging a mightier to the con ict; not thereby teaching him any moral lesson, but Only giving evidence in the fable which he uttered, that his own pride was ofiended by the challenge of the Jewish king. Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in Whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations.
