The field of optics has become central to major developments in medical imaging, remote sensing, communication, micro- and nanofabrication, and consumer technology, among other areas. Applications of optics are now found in products such as laser printers, bar-code scanners, and even mobile phones. There is a growing need for engineers to understan

The first edition of this textbook was published only last year, and now, the publisher has decided to issue a paperback edition. This is intended to make the text more affordable to everyone who would like to broaden their knowledge of modem problems in optics. The aim of this book is to provide a basic understanding of the impor tant features of the various topics treated. A detailed study of all the sub jects comprising the field of engineering optics would fill several volumes. This book could perhaps be likened to a soup: it is easy to swallow, but sooner or later heartier sustenance is needed. It is my hope that this book will stimulate your appetite and prepare you for the banquet that could be yours. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those readers, especially Mr. Branislav Petrovic, who sent me appreciative letters and helpful com ments. These have encouraged me to introduce a few minor changes and improvements in this edition.

Quantum Optics for Engineers provides a transparent and methodical introduction to quantum optics via the Dirac's bra–ket notation with an emphasis on practical applications and basic aspects of quantum mechanics such as Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Schrodinger's equation. Self-contained and using mainly first-year calculus and algebra tools, the book: Illustrates the interferometric quantum origin of fundamental optical principles such as diffraction, refraction, and reflection Provides a transparent introduction, via Dirac's notation, to the probability amplitude of quantum entanglement Explains applications of the probability amplitude of quantum entanglement to optical communications, quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation, and quantum computing. Quantum Optics for Engineers is succinct, transparent, and practical, revealing the intriguing world of quantum entanglement via many practical examples. Ample illustrations are used throughout its presentation and the theory is presented in a methodical, detailed approach.

Topics covered by this text include imaging, radiometry, source detectors and lasers, with a special emphasis on flux-transfer issues. The author takes a first-order approach so that students and professionals can quickly make the back-of-envelope calculations needed for initial setup of optical apparatus. The target is to help readers solve the practical problems frequently encountered by those new to the field of electro-optics. The text aims to enable readers to answer such questions as: where is the image, how big is it, how much light gets to the detectors, and how small an object is it possible to see?
