This book gathers together many of the principal essays of Richard Hunter, whose work has been fundamental in the modern re-evaluation of Greek literature after Alexander and its reception at Rome and elsewhere. At the heart of Hunter’s work lies the high poetry of Ptolemaic Alexandria (Callimachus, Theocritus, and Apollonius of Rhodes) and the narrative literature of later antiquity (‘the ancient novel’), but comedy, mime, didactic poetry and ancient literary criticism all fall within the scope of these studies. Principal recurrent themes are the uses and recreation of the past, the modes of poetic allusion, the moral purposes of literature, the intellectual context for ancient poetry, and the interaction of poetry and criticism. What emerges is not a literature shackled to the past and cowed by an ‘anxiety of influence’, but an energetic and constantly experimental engagement with both past and present.

Coming After gathers critical pieces by acclaimed poet Alice Notley, author of Mysteries of Small Houses and Disobedience. Notley explores the work of second-generation New York School poets and their allies: Ted Berrigan, Anne Waldman, Joanne Kyger, Ron Padgett, Lorenzo Thomas, and others. These essays and reviews are among the first to deal with a generation of poets notorious for their refusal to criticize and theorize, assuming the stance that "only the poems matter." The essays are characterized by Notley's strong, compelling voice, which transfixes the reader even in the midst of professional detail. Coming After revives the possibility of the readable book of criticism.

Roy Shaw is the ultimate hardman, he has a cult status and commands a respect that few, even in the violent world he moves in, can equal. He was the original Guv'nor, and the great rival of Lenny McLean. Roy's words speak for themselves: I'm Roy Shaw. Maybe my name means nothing to you. Why should it? I'm no actor, no showman, no wannabe celebrity. I'm not loud or brash and I don't huff or puff or growl at anyone, but I live by a merciless code. For me violence is simply an accepted part of my profession - the profession of violence. I don't exaggerate the violence I have inflicted. I can't excuse it and I certainly won't apologise for it. If that makes me the devil, then the devil I am - I haven't got horns sticking out of my head or cloven hooves and a tail, but if you're unlucky enough to have me coming after you then beware - "cos hell's coming with me.

This book explores the legacies of suffering in relation to ‘those who come after’ – the descendants of victims, survivors and perpetrators of traumatic events. It draws on recent discussions of ‘postmemory’ and ‘haunting’ that are concerned mainly with the transgenerational impact of personal and social trauma. It examines how we are connected to past events for which we have no direct responsibility yet in which we might in some way be ‘implicated’ and it asks how we might attain a position of active witnessing that helps resolve the suffering of others. Those Who Come After includes vivid accounts of witnessing from a variety of perspectives, ranging from Biblical and Jewish stories to contemporary art and music. The book draws on psychosocial studies and psychoanalysis to help make sense of this material and to develop an understanding of acknowledgment and responsibility that is both ethical and emancipatory. Those Who Come After will be of great interest to readers in psychosocial studies and psychoanalysis and to all who are concerned with the question of how to put past suffering to rest.

So you consider all this clone business reality now. The genetic vegetables, fruits, and nuts so authentic—maybe better! What a difference a decade can make—clone your pet if you want. But aside from its popularity, on the square, there is an incredible amount of magic that goes into reproducing. Even more fantastical is the illicit of questions concerning human duplication. The practice of which is under censure of the Lord. And with little or no proof of them actually existing one is left cleaved to the foolery that be—mere speculation! What's more, tending to believe too readily is the nature of an idiot, while what falls on the wise man to carry is the age to come. How strange the things you will start to notice—understandably what's being kept from public knowledge now. The naysayers can go string a hammock—string two while they’re at it since the genetically engineered are already here. With that in view we need to mind these people’s feelings. Come what may, they stand rooted in the shadows—angry rampant lions with no testament of them having a soul. Well till they read what's within. And one day soon they will.
