Methods of doing work and our results. In no other body of men in the world could we find so many of vast experience in accidental surgery; it is a branch of medicine by itself, a branch not sufficiently emphasized in our colleges. There can be but few rules laid down in regard to the treatment of railroad injuries, the injuries are of such variety. Only by experience can one master the subject. I have practiced surgery almost exclusively for forty odd {years and have seen a vast variety of cases, yet every year at our meetings I learn something new, hear of some rare accident, of its treatment and the result. To me they are very beneficial; to a young man they must be incalculably so. Let us attend the meetings; let us listen with rapt attention, and when we have separated and each gone to his duty treasure in our memories the new truths we have learned, and at the first opportunity use them. It is only a few years since the birth of bacteriology, the regeneration of pathology and the advent of asepsis and an tisepsis. It is scarcely a decade since the rejuvenating of Military Surgery and the evolution of its twin sister, Railway Surgery. Each year brings them into a higher state of development and with each year's experience it has been demonstrated that The higher the order of railway surgery, the greater the protection to the employe, the passenger and the company. With the Third Annual Report of the Transactions of the American Academy of Railway Surgeons, the Editor has the pleasure of presenting its Fellows with over fifty pages more of reading matter than was con tained in the last volume and a hundred and fifty more than was contained in the previous one. For this you are indebted to the authors who contributed so liber ally to the proceedings and the Fellows who partook in the various discussions. In presenting this, the Third Annual Report, the Editor feels that his ambition is being gratified in so much, that each succeeding volume of the Transac tions has excelled its predecessor.
