Heritage is synonymous with Nassau Country Club, home of the "two dollar Nassau wager"; also of the original Calamity Jane, renowned putter of Bobby Jones, & the Nassau bowl, oldest tennis award in the U.S. This Nassau Journey began 100 years ago in the heart of the old Gold Coast of Glen Cove, Long Island. The founders were rich in the history of this country at the turn into the 1900's. Among its first golf professionals were Alex Smith & Jimmie Maiden, from Carnoustie, Scotland. Nassau CC was The Place To Be for Jones, Travers, & Hagen, Vardon & Ray--for Nassau Bowl aspirants tennis greats Clothier, Tilden, Riggs, Trabert & Newcombe--J. P. Morgan & Percy Chubb--past Presidents of the U.S., luminaries, & royalty from abroad. Nassau is that rich in past tournaments in golf, lawn tennis, & squash that we earnestly researched & detailed many matches stroke by stroke; although unique for a club history, we invite the true follower to relive the excitement of days past to the present. Along the way, we introduce our members, their fun ways, the challenges exacerbated by two world wars, & the paths followed to solve problems & insure a future bicentennial.

Pictorial history of golf on Long Island, from the earliest country clubs to public courses of note. When the European sport of golf found its way to Long Island and took root in the Hamptons at Shinnecock Hills in 1891, its journey across the Atlantic served as the opening drive of a recreational era that now spans three centuries. Home to more than 130 golf courses, the area boasts prestigious American clubs overlooking picturesque Atlantic bays and inlets, along with public layouts climbing and descending the region's sloping terrain. Long Island is home to the most popular municipal golf facility in the country, the centerpiece of which is Bethpage Black, the People's Country Club. Celebrated architects like A.W. Tillinghast, Devereux Emmet, Seth Raynor, and C.B. Macdonald built many of Long Island's famous courses, which have challenged the brightest of golf's stars. International tournaments and star-studded exhibitions have all been decided on Long Island turf, helping it grow into one of the world's most prominent golf settings.

Glen Cove, the only city located on Long Island's Gold Coast, has long been reinventing itself. After World War II, the farms and estates in the area gave way to suburban development. Modern advancements like the zoom lens, the dimmer switch, and X-ray technologies were all developed within the city limits, while factories on the creek supplied the world with carbon paper, typewriter ribbons, and graphic arts film and cameras. Albert Einstein, Nikita Khrushchev, and the Kennedy families stayed in the community, and stars of stage and screen performed about town. In 1968, Glen Cove celebrated its tricentennial. It was followed by urban renewal and the rebuilding of the old downtown. In the final years of the 20th century, the industrial era ended, and under the auspices of Mayor Thomas Suozzi, environmental cleanup and waterfront revitalization began.

In this entertaining cultural history, Moss explores the circumstances that led to the establishment of the country club as an American social institution and its inextricable connection to the ancient, imported game of golf. Moss traces the evolution of country clubs from informal groups of golf-playing friends to "country estates" in the suburbs and eventually into public and private daily-fee courses, corporate country clubs, and gated golfing communities. The book shows how these developments reflect shifts in American values and attitudes toward health and sport, as well as changing social dynamics.
