In Broken Hearts, Fences and Other Things to Mend by Katie Finn, Gemma had her summer all planned out, but it takes sharp turn when she gets dumped and finds herself back in the Hamptons after a five-year absence. Being there puts her at risk of bumping into Hallie, her former best friend (that is, before Gemma ruined her life). But people don't hold grudges forever. Do they? Gemma intends on making amends, but a small case of mistaken identity causes the people she knew years ago—including Hallie and her dreamy brother Josh—to believe she's someone else. As though the summer wasn't complicated enough already. Can Gemma keep up the charade? Or will she be found out by the very people she's been hiding from?

Being hurt and heartbroken is a sad reality for most of us. But I'm so thankful for this treasure of a book written by my friend Suzie Eller. Page by page, Suzie will help you understand how God's truth can heal your pain so you can move forward whole and healed. - Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times Bestselling Author and President of Proverbs 31 Ministries Brokenness happens. Tragedy, sin or the painful choices of others all have the ability to disrupt an otherwise contented life. And as a result of our heartache, we often attempt to fix our own brokenness—with disastrous results. If you've tried to heal, but keep ending up in the same place—whether the battle is in your heart or out in the open where everyone can see—The Mended Heart is for you. In this book, author Suzanne Eller tells it like it is: people throw quick fixes at you, or tell you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps (whatever that means). More important, though, she shares the powerful truth of Jesus' mission as outlined in Luke 4:18-21: He came to set free all those who are oppressed and in need of mending. You don’t have to fix yourself—Jesus loves you right where you are. In fact, He has already completed the work that needs to be done. The Mended Heart will encourage you to trust Him, to give and receive grace, and to move ahead even stronger than before … even if others don’t move with you.

Imagine if we treated broken hearts with the same respect and concern we have for broken arms? Psychologist Guy Winch urges us to rethink the way we deal with emotional pain, offering warm, wise, and witty advice for the broken-hearted. Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn’t expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion—if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it. Through compelling research and new scientific studies, Winch reveals how and why heartbreak impacts our brain and our behavior in dramatic and unexpected ways, regardless of our age. Emotional pain lowers our ability to reason, to think creatively, to problem solve, and to function at our best. In How to Fix a Broken Heart he focuses on two types of emotional pain—romantic heartbreak and the heartbreak that results from the loss of a cherished pet. These experiences are both accompanied by severe grief responses, yet they are not deemed as important as, for example, a formal divorce or the loss of a close relative. As a result, we are often deprived of the recognition, support, and compassion afforded to those whose heartbreak is considered more significant. Our heart might be broken, but we do not have to break with it. Winch reveals that recovering from heartbreak always starts with a decision, a determination to move on when our mind is fighting to keep us stuck. We can take control of our lives and our minds and put ourselves on the path to healing. Winch offers a toolkit on how to handle and cope with a broken heart and how to, eventually, move on.

As a hospice volunteer, I have had the privilege of sitting with patients who are dying and am struck by the intimate and meaningful conversations we've had. Often we talk about the fear they might experience in facing their imminent death. Always we reflect on their lives-what they accomplished, who they were in the world, how they will be remembered. One of my goals focuses on helping them leave their legacy in some way, be it an oral history, an ethical will, a loving letter, etc. Most importantly, what surfaces for me from the experience of being with people at the end of their lives is the importance of exploring the life lessons I've learned. Reflecting on how the person lived and the legacy he/she left behind helps me to look within. Some questions I find myself asking are: Am I leading a meaningful life that matters? Is my life filled with love? How can I best spend the days I have left on this earth? What do I want to leave behind? What will my own legacy be? Mending Broken Hearts delves into the different ways we mourn and the personal stories of love and loss. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is about to lose a loved one or who has already lost someone dear to them. Merle R. Mending Children’s Broken Hearts By: Armando I. Perez, Ph.D. Mending Children’s Broken Hearts is a collection of the thoughts and experiences of Grace S. Wolff, a respected innovative pediatric cardiologist. The subject matter is daunting—Grace devoted her career to the care of severely ill children. Yet Grace’s stories are shot through with an almost miraculous compassion. She trusted, and she teaches the reader to trust, that there is a thread of hope and wonder even in the worst misfortune. The book stands as a tribute to Grace, to preserve and share her conviction that patient care should be built from the recognition of each patient as an individual human being. It should be useful to patients, medical professionals, and caregivers, as a source of solace and wisdom.
