The representation of aquatic people in contemporary film and television—from their on-screen sexuality to the mockumentaries they’ve inspired. Mermaids have been a feature of western cinema since its inception and the number of films, television series, and videos representing them has expanded exponentially since the 1980s. Making a Splash analyses texts produced within a variety of audiovisual genres. Following an overview of mermaids in western culture that draws on a range of disciplines including media studies, psychoanalysis, and post-structuralism, individual chapters provide case studies of particular engagements with the folkloric figure. From Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” to the creation of Ursula, Ariel’s tentacled antagonist in Disney’s 1989 film, to aspects of mermaid vocality, physicality, agency, and sexuality in films and even representations of mermen, this work provides a definitive overview of the significance of these ancient mythical figures in 110 years of western audio-visual media.

When Morgan starts swimming lessons, he has lots of problems to deal with. There is the towel flicking and the slimy floor in the change room. There's the jiggles in his tummy he needs to cover up with his t-shirt and the scary possibility that his suit will drop to his knees when he jumps in. Worst of all, Aldeen Hummell, the Godzilla of Grade Three, has told him she will turn him into cat food if he doesn't cover for her while she plays hooky. Once again Morgan finds himself dragged into Aldeen's plans. But by playing the clown, and facing his own fears, he thinks he can free himself from her clasp by helping her get her badge. Morgan Makes a Splash is a hilarious story about gathering courage to cope with difficult situations.

Life isn't always smooth sailing-even with magical boots! "A fanciful and fun read—where do we get a pair of those boots?" —Sheryl Berk and Carrie Berk, authors of The Cupcake Club series Maggie Malone wants to fit in at her new school, so she decides to join the swim team. Only her tryout is a complete flop (of the belly variety, to be exact). What Maggie needs is a little help from her mostly magical boots! What could be better than spending a day as Marina Tide, daughter of a famous oceanographer? So Maggie jumps into Marina's shoes—er, flippers—for a day of sunbathing, ocean breezes and an adorable pet dolphin! But there's a treasure-hunting traitor aboard her ship... and it's up to Maggie to save the crew and the coral reef before her time runs out. "This lighthearted contemporary fantasy will appeal to fans of Sarah Mlynowski's "Whatever After" series and be a nice fit for readers graduating from the "Katie Kazoo" series by Nancy Krulik." —School Library Journal
