This book gives a self-contained introduction to the theory of lambda-rings and closely related topics, including Witt vectors, integer-valued polynomials, and binomial rings. Many of the purely algebraic results about lambda-rings presented in this book have never appeared in book form before. This book concludes with a chapter on open problems related to lambda-rings.

Presenting an introduction to the theory of Hopf algebras, the authors also discuss some important aspects of the theory of Lie algebras. This book includes a chapters on the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, the Hopf algebra of representations of the symmetric groups, the Hopf algebras of the nonsymmetric and quasisymmetric functions, and the Hopf algebra of permutations.

This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book on the topic of planetary rings systems yet written. The conference proceedings volume is produced in connection with the second Great Lakes K-theory Conference that was held at The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences in March 1996. The volume is dedicated to the late Bob Thomason, one of the leading research mathematicians specializing in algebraic K-theory.
