Ce livre est une introduction aux processus de la traduction non littéraire et à son enseignement, ceci à travers des modèles (le plus souvent ce sont des exemples à partir de l'anglais) dans une optique pédagogique orientée processus. C'est un livre didactique présentant les principes, les méthodes et l'enseignement, rédigé par un auteur ayant plus de 25 ans d'expériences de traducteur et d'enseignant de la traduction non littéraire. Il permet au lecteur étudiant ou professionnel, de mieux comprendre certains aspects méconnus de la traduction, en particulier la nature des connaissances linguistiques du traducteur, l'importance de la prise de décisions, les stratégies d'acquisition des nouvelles connaissances. Cette présentation de la traduction non littéraire et de son enseignement à partir de modèles théorico-méthodologiques est une présentation novatrice en France. Cette méthode s'applique à toutes les langues et peut être accompagnée d'un manuel plus spécialisé pour une langue particulière.

As a sequel to?An Encyclopedia of Translation: ChineseEnglish EnglishChinese, which was published in 1995, this volume,?An Encyclopedia of Practical Translation and Interpreting, focuses on practical translation and interpreting, the two emerging areas of increasing importance in recent decades. Some chapters in this volume are illustrated with examples in translation between Chinese and English. Scholars and experts from China, France, Hong Kong, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States share with us their experiences in translation or interpreting practice. This encyclopedia should be of great interest to both specialists and general readers.

Second language assessment is ubiquitous. It has found its way from education into questions about access to professions and migration. This volume focuses on the main debates and research advances in second language assessment in the last fifty years or so, showing the influence of linguistics, politics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and psychometrics. There are four parts which, when taken together, address the principles and practices of second language assessment while considering its impact on society. Read separately, each part addresses a different aspect of the field. Part I deals with the conceptual foundations of second language assessment with chapters on the purposes of assessment, and standards and frameworks, as well as matters of scoring, quality assurance, and test validation. Part II addresses the theory and practice of assessing different second language skills including aspects like intercultural competence and fluency. Part III examines the challenges and opportunities of second language assessment in a range of contexts. In addition to chapters on second language assessment on a national scale, there are chapters on learning-oriented assessment, as well as the uses of second language assessment in the workplace and for migration. Part IV examines a selection of important issues in the field that deserve attention. These include the alignment of language examinations to external frameworks, the increasing use of technology to both deliver and score second language tests, the responsibilities associated with assessing test takers with special needs, the concept of 'voice' in second language assessment, and assessment literacy for teachers and other test and score users.

Originally published in different journals and collected volumes, these papers in conceptual analysis cover some central topics in translation theory and research: types of theory and hypothesis; causality and explanation; norms, strategies and so-called universals; translation sociology, and ethics. There are critical reviews of Catford’s theory, and of Skopos theory, and of Kundera’s views on literary translation, and detailed analyses of the literal translation hypothesis and the unique items hypothesis. The methodological discussions, which draw on work in the philosophy of science, will be of special relevance to younger researchers, for example those starting work on a doctorate. Some of the arguments and positions defended – for instance on the significant status of conceptual, interpretive hypotheses, and the ideal of consilience – relate to wider ongoing debates, and will interest any scholar who is concerned about the increasing fragmentation of the field and about the future of Translation Studies.
