This poignant story is set in a school and then rest home environment, following the life lessons passed from a teacher to her pupils, and aligning these with the example set by Maori gods and ancestors. As the story unfolds the teacher ages and retires, and we see the beautiful and caring relationship between 'Nan' and her granddaughter. Nan passes away; we are reminded of the circular nature of life as her granddaughter begins to teach her own pupils lessons from the ancestors.

"This is a biography of English artist Isaac Coates who painted an important series of historical Māori portraits in Te Tau Ihu/Top of the South and the Wellington area, between 1841 and 1845. The 58 watercolour portraits depict Māori men and women from chiefly whakapapa, as well as commoners and at least one slave. Coates's meticulous records of each subject's name, iwi and place of residence are invaluable, and his paintings are strong images of individuals, unlike the stereotyped art of the day. Sir Timoti Karetu and Dr Wharehuia Milroy are widely recognised as two of New Zealand’s leading teachers and scholars of Maori language and culture. They both taught at The University of Waikato from the 1970s and pursued an innovative approach by teaching language courses in te reo Maori, with tikanga courses taught in Maori and English. Te Wharehuia and Timoti were pioneers in this area, forging a model for teaching Maori which is now followed by many other tertiary institutions.
