Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and of Electricians, 1881, Vol. 10: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science Weber's measurement has since been repeated with closely accordant results by Joule, Bunsen, Casselman, F. Kohlrausch, and others. In 1851, Weber pointed out that a knowledge of the absolute intensity of the earth's magnetic force also furnishes a basis for an absolute method of measuring steam-motive forces; since, according to the laws of induced currents established by Faraday, whenever a conducting circuit is displaced in a magnetic field, an electro motive force acts in it, the magnitude of which depends only on the dimensions and motion of the circuit, and on the strength of the magnetic field. It is evident that electro-motive forces, thus stated in terms of absolute magnetic intensity, would be known in absolute measure, for the dimensions and motion of the conducting circuit involve only the units of length and time.
