Excerpt from Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, 1903, Vol. 12 These experiences, with some variations, were repeated on the reembarkation of the 5th Army Corps after the surrender Of the city of Santiago de Cuba. The condition of the victorious troops on landing at Montauk, at the close Of the campaign, is too well known to need comment. The necessity for improved methods Of over sea transport for troops and war material had, among other things, become obvious. In the meantime similar difficulties had been encountered in the movement Of the first expedition to the Philippines. On the Pacific coast, as on the Atlantic seaboard, it became evident that suitable vessels for the transport of an increasing army rendered necessary by the in surrection of the Filipinos, could hardly be Obtained. The occu pation Of Cuba and Porto Rico also demanded a continuous ocean service which commercial lines were unable to furnish in a satis factory manner. Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 43: Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States; July, 1918 We can also appreciate more fully the necessity of the utmost care in treatment to preclude delays and reverses in the course of repair of every fracture coming into our hands. There is no other type of wound which requires a longer time to repair before the soldier can be returned as a fighting man, and few others more liable to render him permanently noneffective. In addition to the classical causes of delayed union, such as syphilis, scurvy, mal-position, interposition Of soft parts, infection and interference with circulation, we have to consider the loss of substance, either from primary trauma by shell fragments or from Operative procedures, the necrosis of poorly nourished fragments. And the destruction Of nerve supply. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This work focuses primarily on military medicine during this conflict. Historian Vincent J. Cirillo argues that there is a universal element of military culture that stifles medical progress. This war gave army medical officers an opportunity to introduce to the battlefield new medical technology, including the X-ray, aseptic surgery and sanitary systems derived from the germ theory. With few exceptions, however, their recommendations were ignored almost completely.

This pleasing duty, therefore, falls on me as the representative of the National Guard of the Empire State. We bid you welcome, gentlemen, and assure you that we Will endeavor to make your Visit to New York pleasant.
