This book examines and explores Jacques Lacan’s controversial topologisation of psychoanalysis, and seeks to persuade the reader that this enterprise was necessary and important. In providing both an introduction to a fundamental component of Lacan’s theories, as well as readings of texts that have been largely ignored, it provides a thorough critical interpretation of his work. Will Greenshields argues that Lacan achieved his most pedagogically clear and successful presentations of his most essential and notoriously complex concepts – such as structure, the subject and the real – through the deployment of topology. The book will help readers to better understand Lacan, and also those concepts that have become prevalent in various intellectual discourses such as contemporary continental philosophy, politics and the study of ideology, and literary or cultural criticism.

Engaging scholars from across humanistic fields grappling with the role and value of theory in our times, Theory's Autoimmunity argues for reclaiming theory's skepticism as a value. To cultivate theory's skeptical impulses is to embrace what Jacques Derrida has termed autoimmunity: a condition of openness to the outside—openness of the self, the community, democracy, or other ideals—that allows for change. Openness to change comes with risks, and the self-protective temptation to immunize oneself or one's community against these risks is strong. Yet without such risks, without openness to otherness, no encounter with the new, with difference, can ever take place. Without autoimmunity, theory becomes stagnant and programmatic, unable to receive and respond to the other or the event, to address, revise, and produce new meanings. Taking up the challenge of thinking theory as skepticism, with and against philosophy, this study turns to literature as an interlocutor, investigating the ways theory, like the literary works of Montaigne, Baudelaire, Stendhal, Morrison, or Duras, declines to put on the interpretive brakes, to stop reading at a point of understanding. Undoing and remaking itself, theory—those critical interpretive practices that revel in the creation and proliferation of meaning—becomes autoimmune.

The privileged link psychoanalysis has to spoken languages does not necessarily facilitate communication among analysts and psychotherapists of different mother tongues. The JEP European Journal of Psychoanalysis - which has been published since 1995 - seeks to overcome these linguistic barriers. It introduces the English reader to important European authors, as well as to authors of, for example, Latin American countries, whose paradigms are close to European "styles." Anyway the JEP European Journal of Psychoanalysis will publish not only translations, but also papers by English-speaking contributors whose works are close to European currents. The journal is not the official organ of any particular school. Material is chosen solely in terms of quality, originality and relevance to international debates in psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic fields. Similarly, significant, hard-to-pigeonhole authors and works falling outside any particular trend are also presented. The JEP European Journal of Psychoanalysis presents debates and trends within psychoanalysis and other related fields (including philosophical, anthropological, literary and historical contributions). Psychoanalysis has practical, ethical, and theoretical implications relevant not only to clinical practice, but also to politics and social policy, philosophy, cultural studies and the social sciences.
