On March 25, 2003 Professor Vernon Hughes of Yale University passed away in New Haven, Connecticut. His career in physics extended over more than 50 years, and his highly influential research work contributed invaluably to numerous fundamental questions in physics.This book comprises a compilation of articles covering talks given at the Vernon Willard Hughes Memorial Symposium, which took place at Yale University in November 2003. Biographic Memoirs Volume 84 contains the biographies of deceased members of the National Academy of Sciences and bibliographies of their published works. Each biographical essay was written by a member of the Academy familiar with the professional career of the deceased.
