CARLOS EDUARDO GAVITO (4/27/1943 - 7/1/2005) was born in La Plata, Argentina. He spent his youth in the barrio of Avellaneda (to the south of Greater Buenos Aires) and the rest of his life circling the globe. He traveled for more than forty years and visited more than ninety countries. He spoke English, Italian, French and Portuguese fluently and could make himself understood in German, Russian and Japanese. He was a universal man who took the tango from the barrio to the world. He began dancing not too long after he started to walk, and then there was no stopping him: tango, rock, folklore, Latin rhythms, swing. On stage and off, there was no dance he didn't try. Over the years, he searched for his own place in the dance world, and then his own tango: the absolutely unique style that brought him to fame. In the mid 90s, after being out of Argentina for many years, he gained international renown with the company of Forever Tango and word got back to Buenos Aires.

The tango is easily the most iconic dance of the last century, its images as familiar as an old friend. But are they the whole story? Peeling back the poster propaganda that has always characterized the tango publicly, this intimate study shows the invisible heart of the dance and the culture that raised it. Drawing on direct experience and conversations with dancers, it reveals much about the role of the tango in Argentinean culture. CARLOS EDUARDO GAVITO (27-4-1943 – 1-7-2005) nació en La Plata (capital de la provincia de Buenos Aires) y vivió de chico en Avellaneda (al sur del Gran Buenos Aires) y de grande en el mundo entero. Viajó durante más de 40 años y conoció más de 90 países, hablaba perfectamente en inglés, italiano, francés y portugués, y se hacía entender en alemán, ruso y japonés: nadie como él más universal pintando su aldea. A mediados de los 90, su renombre internacional rebotó a Buenos Aires con su consagración en la compañía Forever Tango y a partir de allí se hizo dueño y señor de las milongas porteñas. En el prólogo a la primera edición en español, Julio Fernández Baraibar decía que una milonga a la que asistía Gavito se transformaba “en una milonga debute, importante”, y cuando Gavito salía a bailar “la pista se convierte en otra cosa”. La vida de este bailarín absolutamente distinto (“bailarín inmóvil”) es un sinnúmero de historias curiosas –cuando no asombrosas–, es una estadística de cifras sorprendentes. Algunas cifras quedarán para el asombro y la imaginación: cuántas veces dio la vuelta al mundo, cuántas mujeres abrazó en las pistas, cuánta gente se emocionó con la precisa delicadeza de sus pasos. Y otra cuenta aún: cuántos, de entre esa gente, cuando lo vieron, decidieron ese día que querían bailar el tango. A Gavito la vida le mezquinó los pocos años que le hubieran faltado para convertirse en una figura de fama. Pero algunos videos y libros como éste se encargan de asegurar su presencia en el paraíso del tango. A cinco años de su muerte, esta nueva edición del libro de Plazaola se edita precisamente en el año en que la Argentina inicia su camino hacia el tricentenario. RICARDO PLAZAOLA (4-2-51) hizo una exitosa carrera en periodismo, que comenzó a mediados de los años 70 en el rápidamente clausurado diario La Calle. Luego colaboró en revistas, como Goles –que lo llevaban a las canchas de fútbol que tanto quiere– y Siete Días, y otras de vida más breve. Formó parte de las redacciones que inauguraron los diarios Tiempo Argentino (en su primera época, y al que acompaño hasta su cierre en 1986) y Página 12. Sin tomarse descanso, pasó a radio Mitre, donde fue jefe del Servicio Informativo durante 12 años, y culminó haciendo televisión en el noticiero de Canal 9). Cuando lo atrapó el tango, escribió notas y colaboraciones sobre el baile y diseñó y condujo durante tres años el programa de radio “Bailo tango”, dedicado específicamente al mundo de las milongas. En la actualidad –además de seguir en el mundo del tango– es docente de la escuela TEA de periodismo, participa del programa radial “Viaje de Ida” como co-conductor y columnista de tango y es asesor en temas de comunicación. Organizaba bailes a los 17 años, desayunó con reyes de Africa y de Asia, incentivó a locales y extranjeros en el tango y eran muchos los que, como dice la contratapa de Yo quería bailar, que salían a la pista después de verlo. En las clases, era contundente. “¿Le marco o no le marco a la mujer esta sacada?”, le preguntó un principiante, en un salón de Boedo. Hizo bajar la música. “A la mujer, en la pista, yo le marco hasta el momento de pestañear”, dijo, Gavito, teatral y definitivo. El Canal Solo Tango sigue pasando esas clases. Un estilo propio, fundado a partir de un consejo -cuenta Gavito y escribe Plazaola- del viejo Márquez, de Pompeya. “Una vez yo estoy pasando delante de él, que está sentado, y me tira del saco y me dice: Pibe, al tango hay que esperarlo. Tres años después, me lo encuentro bailando en Almagro. Me acerco y le digo: Maestro… El me ataja y me dice: ¿Venís a preguntar qué hay que esperar?. Me quedé helado. Que la música te llegue a vos, no la corras”.
