Sport and physical activity are embedded in our education systems and in wider society. During the past decades, the scientific discipline of Sports Didactics has developed in a heterogenous manner across national borders and individual university locations in Europe. Its position and situatedness has been characterised by its relation to and differentiation from Sports Pedagogy and other sub-disciplines within sports and educational sciences. The significance of Sports Didactics remains closely connected to the role of the school subject Physical Education as well as Physical Education Teacher Education at universities and colleges. This collected volume provides an overview of the subject understandings, theory landscapes, research contexts and practice models across 24 European countries along five lines of investigation: national historical developments of Sports Didactics, main trends and tendencies of theoretical differentiation, application fields of research and theory formation, recent research perspectives and possible future developments.

This book is divided into three parts: Part A includes general items of development of PESS in Europe. Part B comprises 17 different country reviews all written by national experts. Part C documents comparative analyses of the country reviews about national school systems; development of compulsory PESS; aims and objectives of current PESS curricula; promotion of active learning with physical activity; extra-curricular settings at school and outside schools in collaboration with active communities; purpose, structure, aims, and objectives of PESS teacher training; current research and findings of PESS studies; and finally, recommendations for new EU-based PESS research studies.

"SLPE" is mainly reserved for congress volumes, which are published in English and which give a general idea of international developments in sport and sport science. Apart from congress papers "SLPE" is open to further scientific reports, discourses and essays about sport and sport science. This volume includes a wide range of articles concerning sport sciences. This volume addresses the conceptions of actors and actorhood in higher education research. It explores the range of actors that are (or should be) recognized and theorized in higher education research, the processes that shape actorhood in the higher education reforms and explores the relations between the actors and higher education reforms. This book examines the impact of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympic Games and highlights the latest findings in the areas of sport policy, elite sports system, sport media, sport facility management and sport social development in the two host countries - China and Britain. It identifies the role of national and local governments, universities and educational institutions in the delivery of elite sport in different cultural and social settings.
