This title was first published in 2002. This innovative work analyses how the United States has laid down the foundations for global power. It reassesses and re-evaluates the declinist-renewal argument and challenges conventional balance of power theories, demonstrating how the United States is attempting to ’hegemonically globalise’ the entire international system. To evaluate the success of hegemonic globalisation, the book analyses four major powers and regions - Russia, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the European Union (EU), and Japan - and their historical, political, economic, cultural and geopolitical relations with the United States. Each study examines the tangible and intangible sources of their relationship, and the possible tensions and resistance towards United States hegemony therein. Providing much-needed insight and a fresh perspective, this book makes a worthwhile contribution to our understanding of contemporary international power.

When commercial media practices are insinuated into local cultures, existing cultural and media practices are often displaced and social inequalities are exacerbated—sometimes with the consent of consumers, but frequently confronting organized proponents. The Globalization of Corporate Media Hegemony provides case studies from five continents—from government-promoted telecommunications programs and technologies in Canada and Britain, MTV Asia's call-in request lines, and the pan-Latin ideology of a Mexican television variety show, to Islamic pop radio in Turkey, commercial radio in Africa, a "Millionaire" game show in India, and Hollywood's muted influence on Korean cinema, among others. Each case offers new insight into the particulars of an expanding corporate hegemony and together they invite the conversation on media globalization to consider the dynamics of class conflict and negotiation as an analytical perspective having prescriptive potential.

This book explores the closely related dynamics of globalization, hegemony and resistance movements in the modern world. Complimented by dramatic explorations of the new trans-border resistance movements, from the contemporary labor movement to the resurgence of nationalism, this book moves beyond the traditional focus on cycles of rise and decline of great powers to asses the pressing questions at the intersection of contemporary globalizations and hegemonic rise, decline and resurgence of civilizations. Moreover, the book provides a compelling analysis of the role of contemporary globalization in the resurgence of Islamic activism across the globe and the challenges this poses for traditional theories of modernity and global social movements. In this major new work - the result of a lifetime of intellectual engagement - one of the developing world's most famous thinkers reflects on the times we live in. He argues that US hegemony has reached a dangerous new level under George Bush Jr, and that the US President's hubristic militarism will both lead to a never-ending cycle of wars and block all hopes of social and democratic progress, not just in developing countries, but in the North as well. Samir Amin also rejects the highly ideological notion that the current form of neoliberal capitalism - 'really existing capitalism' in which imperialism is an integral and permanent part - is an inevitable future for humanity, or in fact socially or politically tolerable. At the same time, he is not opposed to globalization as such; indeed he believes the whole world today is irrevocably connected, and that solidarity in diversity is the key to the struggle for a better world. In the body of the book, Amin provides a perspicacious analysis of tendencies within the rich countries - the US, Europe and Japan; the rising powers - China and India; the likely future trajectory of post-Soviet Russia; and the developing world. The central question he pursues is whether there are other hegemonic blocs that may emerge in time to circumscribe American power, and constrain free market capitalism and force it to adjust to demands other than its narrow central economic logic. This important and thought-provoking book identifies the key global campaigns Samir feels progressives should launch around the world. 'Another world is possible.' But, he warns, the diverse citizens' movements loosely gathered together in the World Social Forum must bite the political bullet and recognise that they can only transform the world if they seek political power.
