Architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) was a towering figure in 20th-century Italian architecture, with a significant impact at the international level. Through the work of his collaborative firm (Banfi Belgiojoso Peressutti Rogers, or BBPR), the editorship of publications such as Domus and Casabella, and his teaching at the Politecnico in Milan, Rogers ensured a lasting influence on the field as a practitioner, theorist and educator. However his contributions have been largely neglected by scholarship outside of Italy. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this book re-assesses Ernesto Nathan Rogers' cultural legacy. It is the first comprehensive, critical work on Rogers in English, and emphasizes Rogers' vision for the role of the architect as a public intellectual, as well as his commitment to pursue a renewed path of professional and cultural research within the “Modern Project.” The book also discusses Roger's willingness to challenge academic classicized monumentality as well as modernist stereotypes, to emerge as a leader of Italian design in the aftermath of World War II; his interest in all scales of design and planning, with a cross-disciplinary mentality; tradition in modernity; and criticality as a mode of practice, to bring a detailed account of the work and thought of Ernesto Nathan Rogers to an English-speaking audience for the first time. Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909 – 1969) – architect, editor, writer and educator – can be credited with expanding the appreciation of modern architecture within the Italian context and beyond. The first English anthology of the writings of a critical figure in the history of modern architecture in Europe. The first English anthology of the writings of the British-Italian architect, editor, critic, and educator Ernesto Rogers (1909–1969), The Hero of Doubt showcases the intellectual power and scope of one of the most influential yet, paradoxically, unrecognized exponents of the modern movement in Europe. These essays, edited by Roberta Marcaccio and newly translated from the Italian, reveal how, more than any other architect of the twentieth century, Rogers positioned himself as a mediator between the heroic generation of the modern masters and the younger intellectuals who went on to shape the contextualist turns of architectural postmodernism in the 1970s. The texts in this volume cover a period of 33 years, from Rogers’s initial adherence to fascism and his subsequent struggle as a Jewish intellectual after the proclamation of the racial purity laws, to his poignant post-war reflections on the issues of reconstruction, the education of the architect and, more broadly, the architect’s role in society. Tracing his nuanced critique of the excesses and inadequacies of both fascism and the utopianism of modernism, the writings show how, over time, Rogers’s ideas resonated through the post-war cultural scene in Italy and beyond. In sum, they fill an obvious lacuna within the history of the modern movement and provide a more layered understanding of postmodernity. This is a book in English on the Italian architects Mario Asnago (1896-1981) and Claudio Vender (1904-1986). Their city was mid-twentieth century Milan in transformation, and the extraordinary Milanese architectural scene of that time is revealed in their work and through the writings of their contemporaries. Cino Zucchi and Adam Caruso provide in-depth analyses of the conceptual and material qualities of the buildings, which are illustrated in survey drawings and photographs of a selection of Asnago Vender's urban projects.
